(CLO) Microsoft is planning to invest about $80 billion in 2025 in developing data centers to train artificial intelligence models and cloud-based applications, the company said last weekend.
Investment in AI has skyrocketed since OpenAI launched ChatGPT in 2022, as companies across a range of industries look to integrate artificial intelligence into their products and services.
AI requires massive computing power, driving demand for specialized data centers that allow tech companies to link thousands of chips together in clusters.

Microsoft has invested billions of dollars to improve its AI infrastructure and expand its data center network. According to Visible Alpha, analysts expect Microsoft’s capital spending in fiscal 2025, including capital leases, to be $84.24 billion.
The company's capital spending in the first quarter of fiscal 2025 increased 5.3% to $20 billion. As a major funder of OpenAI, the tech giant is considered a frontrunner among major tech companies in the AI race thanks to its exclusive partnership with the AI chatbot maker.
More than half of Microsoft's $80 billion investment will be in the United States, Corporate Vice President and General Manager Brad Smith said in a blog post.
“Today, the United States is leading the global AI race thanks to private capital investment and innovation from American companies of all sizes, from dynamic startups to established enterprises,” Smith said.
