Female student Nguyen Cat Tuong (18 years old, from Tien Giang) shared the good news with her mother when she officially became a member of the "House" of Helping to Go to School this year.

Cat Tuong is currently a first-year student majoring in multimedia communications at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities - Ho Chi Minh City National University.

Cat Tuong's parents divorced when she was only 2 years old. Tuong's mother, a hired worker, had to raise her child alone and has not received any financial support from her father since then. To pay for her child's tuition, her mother had to borrow money, which is currently over 80 million VND.

"I feel happy and lucky to have received a scholarship from the sponsors and Tuoi Tre newspaper. I will use this 15 million VND to cover my study expenses and will always remember this day in my heart - the day when the whole society reached out to help me not to get lost at the university door", Cat Tuong expressed.

Journalist Tran Xuan Toan - Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Tuoi Tre Newspaper: Dream and strive to gradually realize your dream.

Speaking at the program, journalist Tran Xuan Toan said that Ben Tre is a very special land with a heroic revolutionary tradition. In the current peaceful period, this land has also created many miracles.

On behalf of the organizing committee, journalist Tran Xuan Toan thanked the leaders of Ben Tre and Tien Giang provinces, businesses and philanthropists. "We are extremely grateful that in the context of economic difficulties and many challenges for businesses, they still set aside money to take care of the new students. On behalf of the organizing committee, I would like to sincerely express my gratitude and thanks to all of you who have supported and accompanied us throughout the past time," said Mr. Toan.

Journalist Tran Xuan Toan said he was touched by the circumstances of many new students. Some of them are orphans, but their strength is their determination. Many of them study at famous schools in Ho Chi Minh City such as the University of Economics, the University of Industry and Trade, and the University of Medicine and Pharmacy, which is a great effort in poor circumstances.

Journalist Tran Xuan Toan hopes that students will fulfill their responsibilities. The first responsibility is to themselves when entering a period of being away from family and friends. They need to take advantage of the opportunity to equip themselves with life skills, including ensuring good health to study and pursue their dreams.

Second, be responsible to your family and relatives. If you have the opportunity to enter a prestigious university or college, you must be responsible to your relatives who have shared their food and clothes with you so that you can study better.

Third is the responsibility to the community, to the uncles, aunts, brothers and sisters who gave me the scholarship so that I can try to study well to not only serve myself but also contribute to my hometown and village.

"You believe that the uncles, aunts, brothers and sisters sitting here are the ones who always accompany and support you. I believe that in 5 years, 10 years, you sitting here will return to build your homeland Ben Tre and Tien Giang to be even more prosperous and beautiful," said journalist Tran Xuan Toan.

Mr. Tran Thanh Lam - Standing Deputy Secretary of Ben Tre Provincial Party Committee: New students of Ben Tre - Tien Giang should confidently walk on bridges of humanity.

Mr. Tran Thanh Lam thanked Tuoi Tre newspaper and the sponsors for founding and maintaining the humane and profound scholarship program "Tiep suc den truong" . He said that he himself has participated in this program many times, each time in a different position, but has the same feeling of respect and trust in the effectiveness and spread of the program to new students and to society.

Mr. Tran Thanh Lam said that Ben Tre and Tien Giang provinces share a river. The dream of many generations of Ben Tre and Tien Giang people is to build many bridges, including Rach Mieu 2 bridge, Ham Luong bridge, Co Chien bridge, Dinh Khao bridge, Cua Dai bridge...

"Talking about a bridge means closeness, sharing, convenience, and development. Today I want to talk about a special bridge, the bridge that Tuoi Tre newspaper and its partners have built over the years. It can be called a bridge of happiness, a bridge of humanity, a bridge of faith, or a bridge that helps dreams take flight.

The bricks to build the bridge come from the hearts of teachers, philanthropists, businesses and many people who contributed to build this very special bridge.

Those who are honored to walk on this bridge are many new students sitting here and previous generations of students.

You step into life at a very difficult stage, entering the university door, with many things lacking in your hands and luggage. But it is this help, this bridge of dreams, that gives you the confidence to move forward.

I believe this bridge will not stop, but will continue to reach further and further, helping each new student who is facing difficulties at the threshold of life. This is truly a very special meaning," Mr. Lam shared.

10am scholarship award ceremony, be there at... 7am

Although the scholarship award ceremony for the "Tiep suc den truong" program will not officially take place until 10am, from 7am to 8am, many new students and their relatives, including grandparents, parents, friends and some who came alone, were present at the award ceremony at the large hall of the Ben Tre Provincial People's Committee.

You could not hide your joy when last night some of you could not sleep, anxiously waiting until morning to attend and receive a scholarship in the program.

New students who are still struggling consider scholarships as "dreams come true". Scholarships help them take the first steps on the journey to change their poor fate with knowledge.

Driving a motorbike taxi, selling vegetables, and helping out at a rice shop. These are the jobs that Vo Thi Oanh (40 years old, Mo Cay Bac district, Ben Tre) has been doing for many years. The income of about 100,000 VND/day temporarily supports Nguyen Quoc Thang - a new student majoring in data science at Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry and Trade to continue studying, when his father unfortunately passed away early.

On the morning of November 10, Ms. Oanh also took a day off work to go with her child to receive the scholarship. "I heard that my child received a scholarship, I was so happy! The amount of 15 million VND is too much compared to my labor. I am grateful to the benefactors who helped. I promise to use this money to help my child continue studying in the field he is passionate about," Ms. Oanh said respectfully.

Representative of the sponsor - President of Ben Tre Business Club in Ho Chi Minh City, Mr. Huynh Ky Tran: "I am also a teacher, I want to promote students to become national talents"

Present early at the scholarship awarding ceremony, Mr. Huynh Ky Tran - President of Ben Tre Business Club in Ho Chi Minh City - said that young people will be the ones to contribute to building the homeland, so we need to follow up, support and help, not let them have to drop out of school just because of poverty.

"As a teacher myself, I understand the value of talent as the vitality of the nation, so we want to support you in part to help new students overcome their current difficulties. Don't forget to use that as motivation to try to study hard to become successful and contribute to the country," said Mr. Ky Tran.

A movie about "strong" mothers and children who never give up

Two new students Le Thi Ngoc Vy and Le Hoai Han - Performed by: MAU TRUONG - NHA CHAN - DIEM HUONG - TRINH TRA

The audience was moved when watching the film about two 18-year-olds who have gone through many hardships. Two children without fathers and living with resilient mothers, one who takes care of her children from one boarding house to another, one who has cancer but is still the breadwinner of the family.

Losing his father, drifting through life depending on others, still passing the university entrance exam

Freshman Le Thi Ngoc Vy choked up in the video and when sharing on the stage of Relay to School - Photo: DUYEN PHAN

Her father passed away when Le Thi Ngoc Vy, a freshman in the Marine Science Department at Ho Chi Minh City University of Transport, was just learning to walk. But the sad thing is that after her father passed away, all the houses and land had to be returned to her father's family.

Ms. Tran Thi Tuyet (48 years old) - mother of new student Le Thi Ngoc Vy - said that whenever there was an empty house, the three of them would ask to stay there temporarily.

"Since my husband passed away, this is the sixth house I have asked to live in," she said. Ms. Tuyet got married in 2002, and in 2004 they both returned to her husband's hometown in Cho Gao district, Tien Giang province to start a business. Her husband's family gave them a plot of land, and the couple borrowed more money to buy two more plots of land to grow vegetables to sell for a living.

But before the paperwork for the entire land could be completed, Ms. Tuyet's husband died. Her husband's family took back all the land and house.

Every day, Mrs. Tuyet does all kinds of things, from cutting grass, collecting scrap metal, helping with housework… as long as she can earn money to pay for her two children’s school fees. Sometimes the landlord doesn’t let her stay, and the mother and children can only hug each other and cry.

The continuous house moves, one after another, more or less affected Vy and her sister's studies. However, overcoming all of that, both sisters entered university one after another. As for the new student Le Thi Ngoc Vy, she has been an excellent student for 12 consecutive years and has now become a new student of the Maritime Science Department at Ho Chi Minh City University of Transport.

The day Vy went to Ho Chi Minh City to enroll in school, Mrs. Tuyet was choked with emotion, but her feelings of uncertainty were hard to describe. According to her, the income from her odd jobs and the small change from collecting scraps could not support her two children to go to college.

She can only hope for scholarships from Tuoi Tre newspaper so that her children will not have to leave their dreams unfinished and end up homeless like her.

Freshman Le Hoai Han - Photo: DUYEN PHAN

Le Hoai Han is a student majoring in business administration at Ho Chi Minh City University of Management and Technology.

Born into a poor family in Giao Thanh commune, Ben Tre, Han did not know his father since he was young. With the job of making beads, earning a few tens of thousands of dong a day could not support 7 mouths in the family, Han's mother also had to support Han's younger brother, his grandfather and 3 youngest aunts and children.

Even though Han's mother was suffering from cancer, she had to leave her family and go to Kien Giang to work as a babysitter and send money back to take care of her children's education.

Mother and child meetings can now only be done through phone screens.

Aware of his family's situation, Han was determined to study hard to escape the poverty that had plagued his family for generations.

Although after school hours Han does all the housework such as laundry, cooking, and cutting grass for the cows, his academic performance is very impressive.

Han won second prize in the district-level excellent student competition for two consecutive years in grades 8 and 9. In addition, Han also won third prize in math in grade 9 and third prize in geography in grade 11.

Perhaps not wanting to add more burden to her mother's shoulders, as soon as she arrived in Ho Chi Minh City, Han quickly found a part-time job at a convenience store near her school to earn extra income.

At the ceremony stage, both new students shared about their difficult circumstances, their incomplete family with only their mother shouldering the daily work, and being sick. What was the motivation for them to overcome such difficulties and adversity?

New student Le Hoai Han (Ho Chi Minh City University of Management and Technology) shared: I think the name Han is not a problem for me, because if the name Han is loved, I will be happy like everyone else, and there will be a bright future waiting for me.

Sharing about the motivation to overcome difficulties, Han said that it was his mother. His mother had to work far away and had a hard time, so he had to motivate himself to study hard to get a job to take care of his mother. His mother always encouraged him to study hard and take care of himself so that he would not have to suffer like his mother.

Freshman Le Thi Ngoc Vy (Ho Chi Minh City University of Transport) also shared her motivation to overcome difficulties intermittently, because she kept crying because she could not control her emotions. Ngoc Vy said that her mother and sister are the biggest motivation, trying to study hard to build a house for the three of them to live through life.

Regarding the upcoming journey, Vy said that the biggest concern is that her mother is alone in the countryside, working to support her two sisters. The most difficult thing is that her mother does not have a stable job and is in poor health. Therefore, the two sisters will try to support their mother, earn extra income from part-time jobs to share with their mother. She is also confident that she will be able to do it, try to study well, find a job that is within her ability to help her mother.

Participating in the exchange with two new students, Mr. Nguyen Kim Lan, head of the Tien Giang - Ben Tre School Support Club, said that over the past 17 years, the Ben Tre and Tien Giang Communities Liaison Committee in Ho Chi Minh City and the two business clubs of these two provinces in Ho Chi Minh City have made efforts to help new students with difficult circumstances, overcome difficulties, study well and have a future to return to help their homeland.

"Each life is an emotion that we consider as a mark of the children's lives that we must help. It is extremely meaningful, creating a very good impression. The children must show their gratitude by studying well, getting a degree so that they can return to their homeland to serve their province. That is what we wish for," Mr. Lan said.

On this occasion, Miss Environment World 2023 Nguyen Thanh Ha presented 60 blank notebooks, each containing 10 books, to new students in Ben Tre and Tien Giang.

Early in the morning, on a dilapidated motorbike, Mr. Trinh Tan Dat, 43 years old (residing in Hung Nhuong commune, Giong Trom district, Ben Tre province) took his daughter Trinh Thi Huong, a new student majoring in Economic Law, Nam Can Tho University to the hall of Ben Tre Provincial People's Committee (Ben Tre city, Ben Tre province) to receive a scholarship.

This is the second time Mr. Dat has taken his son to receive the Tuoi Tre Newspaper's "Tie suc den truong" scholarship. The first time was 3 years ago, when the family's eldest son went to university.

"At that time, my family faced many difficulties. It seemed like my child's education was unfinished. But thanks to the Tuoi Tre newspaper's scholarship to support his studies, he is now a final year student majoring in Automotive Technology at Ho Chi Minh City University of Technical Education," said Mr. Dat.

Three years ago, Dat's family was poor. Now, his family is near-poor. The main source of income is the small salary from his and his wife's construction and cleaning jobs.

Despite being poor, Mr. Dat and his wife reassured each other that they would do everything to ensure their child would not have to drop out of school. Moreover, there were also philanthropists with meaningful scholarships.

Nhut said he was born into a poor family. His parents divorced when he was in 6th grade. Nhut lives with his father and grandparents. Nhut's father currently has no stable job and an unstable income.

That is new student Le Minh Nhut, from Thanh Phu town, Thanh Phu district, Ben Tre province.

Talking about his arduous journey, Nhut said: "I always try my best to study. In 2023, I passed the high school graduation exam and passed the entrance exam to the Army Officer School 2. But after a period of studying and working, I discovered that I had varicose veins (4.5 degrees) so I could not continue studying and doing heavy exercise for a long time. I was discharged from the army and returned to my hometown. I continued to apply for admission and passed the pharmacy major at Ben Tre College to continue studying and improve my future."

But difficulties still followed Nhut as the school year was approaching and his family could not find a few million to pay for his tuition. Sympathizing with his situation, teachers in Thanh Phu district stood up to raise enough money for Nhut to enroll in school.

The day he carried his backpack to school to complete the admission procedures, Nhut also prepared his application to apply for a job in Ben Tre City to earn money to both pay off his debt and cover his studies.

"Today, receiving a scholarship from the program, I am very happy because I have some money to cover my studies. But the happiest thing is that I realize that there are teachers, philanthropists and programs that always accompany and support new students with difficulties like me."
