According to VGC , some images of the new PlayStation 5's initial setup process seem to confirm that players will now need an internet connection to pair the console's new removable drive.
The images were posted on social media by a user who got their hands on Sony's upcoming PlayStation 5 'Slim' console. The user has since deleted the images, presumably to avoid attracting Sony's attention, but they have now gone viral on X (formerly Twitter).
Article shared about the new PlayStation 5 requiring Internet to authenticate removable drives
The setup process for the new console appears to confirm that an internet connection will be required the first time you use it to pair the removable drive. This is likely a security measure to ensure that the drive is legitimate and complies with the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA).
It’s worth noting that the images also show that even the PlayStation 5 version with a built-in physical disc drive will be required to authenticate online for the first time. While the vast majority of users have internet access and won’t be affected, the new requirement could impact future game preservation. Since the authentication process requires an internet connection, there may come a time when the company’s servers will even authenticate older games that are no longer available.

It's possible that by the time this happens, Sony will release an update that removes this requirement, but that could be years in the future, possibly when the PlayStation 5 is no longer Sony's primary console.
It's also unclear whether the drive can be swapped out after pairing with the console, or whether the process will need to be repeated after a factory reset. That remains to be seen.
