Vietnam's export goods rank 2nd in the world, earning 4.5 million USD in January

Star anise exports to the Chinese market increased by over 65%. Cinnamon exports in 2023 earned 260.9 million USD.

According to data from the Vietnam Pepper Association (VPA), star anise exports in January 2024 reached 879 tons with a value of more than 4.5 million USD, down 18.8% compared to the previous month but up sharply by 32% compared to January 2023.

India is Vietnam's largest export market with 499 tons, accounting for 57% of the total. In the whole year of 2023, Vietnam earned 83 million USD from star anise exports, with output reaching 16,136 tons, a sharp increase of 26% in volume.

India is Vietnam's largest export market with 499 tons, accounting for 57% of the total.

The average export price in 2023 reached 6,376 USD/ton, down 8% compared to the previous year. In the whole year of 2023, India and China remained the two largest markets with 7,860 tons and 4,116 tons, accounting for 48.7% and 25.5% of the export market, respectively.

Lang Son is known as the 'capital' of star anise with a growing area of ​​about 40,000 hectares, an annual output of more than 16,000 tons and an average annual economic value of over 1,000 billion VND. According to the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Lang Son, in 2022 alone, the estimated harvest output is 13,000 tons of dried star anise and the value is about 1,500 billion VND. Previously, in 2021, Lang Son star anise products had an export value of 31 million USD, equivalent to an export output of about 3,500 tons of dried star anise.

Besides being a spice favored by many countries, star anise is also a valuable medicine for people with bone and joint diseases, helping to treat and reduce coughs, stomachaches, flu and regulate blood circulation,... Star anise stems have characteristic flavors like seeds, eaten as vegetables. Seeds are processed and used in some food products. Star anise powder is very suitable for baking and is the main spice for many recipes such as duck, pork...

Vietnam is currently one of the leading countries in exporting spices, with the world's leading position in pepper production and export, the world's number 1 in cinnamon export, and the world's number 2 in star anise export. In addition, other spices also occupy quite important positions such as: Chili, clove, ginger, cardamom... The markets for importing Vietnamese spices are also increasingly diverse, such as the US, EU, China, India and the Middle East.
