Margot Robbie joked on a recent episode of the Talking Pictures podcast that slapping her co-star was actually a form of assault that could have led to her being arrested.
Luckily, Margot Robbie said DiCaprio and the film's director Martin Scorsese loved the dare. She walked away from the audition not only with the part but also with her anxiety gone.
"That wasn't in the script," Robbie said of the slapping scene, referring to the "water-slapping" scene she read with DiCaprio during the audition.
Robbie said that at a certain point after they improvised, DiCaprio "said the last line, 'come here and kiss me'."
"In my head I was like, I could totally kiss Leonardo DiCaprio right now. That would be awesome. I can't wait to tell all my friends this. And then I was like, 'no'. I'd just punch him in the face," she added with a laugh.
According to Margot Robbie, everything went so quiet that it felt like an eternity until Scorsese and DiCaprio "burst into laughter" and complimented her on how "cool!" she was.
But, Robbie says, panic set in. She told herself, "I'm going to get arrested. I'm pretty sure this is assault. Not only will I never be able to work again, I could actually go to jail for this."
Of course, Margot Robbie never went to jail for slapping DiCaprio. Her role in The Wolf of Wall Street became her big break when it was released in theaters in 2013. The film also received five Oscar nominations at the time and launched her into a thriving Hollywood career as an Oscar-nominated actress and producer.
