Manchester United had comfortably beaten Newcastle 2-0 in last season's League Cup final thanks to goals from Marcus Rashford and Casemiro. However, that scenario didn't repeat itself in this rematch. Despite Newcastle fielding a team with many reserve players, the "Red Devils" continued to play disjointedly, just as they did when they lost 0-3 to Manchester City in the Premier League last weekend, and conceded goals to Migel Almiron, Lewis Hall, and Joe Willock.
Ten Hag rested several key players such as Rashford, Bruno Fernandes, and Rasmus Hojlund. However, considering the strength of the squads, it can be said that Man Utd had the edge with Casemiro, Andre Onana, Mason Mount, Antony, and Harry Maguire still on the field. Meanwhile, manager Eddie Howe replaced the entire Newcastle defense compared to the 2-2 draw against Wolves, and also rested Miguel Almiron, Callum Wilson, and Bruno Guimaraes.
