Maguire became the hero when he scored the decisive goal in the 120+1 minute, helping MU come back to win 5-4 against Lyon in the second leg of the Europa League quarter-finals. However, before celebrating, the centre-back had to wait for VAR to confirm the goal due to a suspected foul in a dispute with Moussa Niakhate.
Speaking to TNT Sports , Maguire said: "I thought he (Niakhate) was backing away and I tried to pin him down with my left hand. There was contact, but I don't think it was enough to call it a foul. I saw the ball and headed it into the far corner."
Speaking more about the decisive goal, the England centre-back said: "Lyon's fourth goal was a big blow. But as soon as we scored the fourth goal, I felt there would be more chances coming and luckily the ball came to me and I put it in the net. It felt great."
Coach Ruben Amorim also spoke about pulling Maguire up to play as a striker: "He is the only one who can score with his head," said the former Sporting CP coach.
Before the match, Joshua Zirkzee was confirmed to be out for the rest of the season due to injury. MU's lineup against Lyon lacked real goalscorers. Rasmus Hojlund was in the starting lineup but did not score or assist after 87 minutes of play. This forced Amorim to find ways to increase the attack and put pressure on the opponent for the rest of the match.
After this victory, MU will advance to the semi-finals to meet Athletic Bilbao. This is an opportunity for the "Red Devils" to continue their ambition to win the Europa League this season.
