Huynh Lap revealed that he once wanted to invite Uyen An and Kaity Nguyen to play the main roles in the movie "Ancestral House", but in the end decided to choose Phuong My Chi.
Ancestral home is the next film project written and directed by Huynh Lap. Notably, Phuong My Chi was assigned to play the female lead role of My Tien in the film. This is also the first time the "folk singer" has tried her hand at the film industry.
In the trailer, Phuong My Chi received many compliments from the audience thanks to her natural acting, true to the cheerful and lovely spirit of the character.
Director Huynh Lap revealed that when he started looking for the main actress for the film, Phuong My Chi was not the first name that came to mind. When writing the script, Huynh Lap thought of Puka with the image of a successful woman returning to her family. Later, he wanted his character to be younger, so he thought of Uyen An and Kaity Nguyen.
"After working with director Ly Minh Thang, he introduced Phuong My Chi to me. Before that, Chi had auditioned for a role in his own project. When Chi came to audition, I decided to choose her because she was the right character I was looking for," Huynh Lap shared.
After working together, Huynh Lap praised Phuong My Chi's acting ability: "In the first days of filming, Chi was still a bit nervous. On the third day, Chi had to film psychological scenes. After that, Chi gradually believed in the character My Tien, to the point that she could act right away, even crying right on set.
At that time, My Chi was just a name, only My Tien was on the set. In addition, Phuong My Chi also created the character in her own way and contributed a lot to the dialogue," said the director.
Talking about her first leading role in a movie, Phuong My Chi admitted that she was drawn to the character as soon as she read the script for Ancestral House.
"The film has elements of Vietnamese culture. In addition, I also really like Huynh Lap so I immediately accepted to act in the film. I tried to learn and ask Lap and Ly Minh Thang to best suit the character. Everyone supported me so that I could become the best My Tien," the female singer said.
Talking about the reason for "not joining the Tet movie race", Huynh Lap responded: "Initially, I planned to release the movie in December, but the movie needed too many special effects so it couldn't be released in time, it had to be completed after Tet. I also think that few audiences would go to the cinema on the first day of Tet to watch a movie with ghosts, it's a bit sensitive. After Tet will be a more suitable time for the movie."
Huynh Lap shared that he himself had many changes in the production of his second movie.
After 5 years since Blind Sorcerer, he learned and watched many Vietnamese films. With Ancestral House, Huynh Lap changed the distribution of characters. He is no longer the central character, but the family is the center. All the characters that appear complement and complete the story about family and love.
"I restrained myself in the script and acting to keep everything moderate, in line with the spirit of cinema. The spiritual elements in this film are not heavy, tending towards horror, but rather leaning towards the spirituality of life, which exists in Vietnamese life such as holding death anniversaries, making offerings, and worshipping ancestors," the director added.
