Why did voters in the US battleground state choose Donald Trump?

Báo Công thươngBáo Công thương27/06/2024

Voters are split on the candidates' approaches to what respondents said were the top two issues facing the nation, according to the latest Reuters/Ipsos poll, which ran for three days ending June 23, less than five months before the Nov. 5 election.

Donald Trump dominates from the economy

In this US presidential election, the economy is identified as the top concern of voters. According to polls, Donald Trump is considered the stronger candidate in terms of economics, with 43% of registered voters supporting him, compared to 37% supporting President Joe Biden.

This support is largely driven by voters’ concerns about rising consumer prices, despite signs of slowing inflation and unemployment remaining below 4% for more than two years. Voters feel the impact of current economic policies on their daily lives, and many believe that Donald Trump can deliver more effective economic solutions.

Supporters of Donald Trump say he is better able to manage the economy thanks to his business experience and strong economic policies during his previous term.

They also stressed that Donald Trump had been successful in boosting economic growth and reducing unemployment before the Covid-19 pandemic broke out. Meanwhile, although President Joe Biden has made great efforts to control inflation and promote employment, concerns about the rising cost of living remain a weakness in the eyes of many voters.

Voters favor Donald Trump's immigration policy

Immigration has also become one of Donald Trump’s strong points in this presidential race. According to polls, Trump has received 44% of voters’ support for his immigration policy, while President Joe Biden only received 31%. Donald Trump continues to attract voters’ support thanks to his tough immigration policies, especially measures to prevent illegal immigration.

One of the key factors contributing to this support is that the immigration rate in the US in 2022 reached its highest level in more than a century. This has increased voters' interest in immigration, and many believe that Donald Trump's policies can better control the situation.

During his previous term, Donald Trump implemented many drastic measures, including building a wall on the border with Mexico and imposing stricter regulations on immigrants. These policies have created a clear difference from the more flexible and humane approach of President Joe Biden's administration.

Supporters of Donald Trump argue that a tough immigration policy is necessary to protect the nation’s borders and ensure security. They argue that stopping illegal immigration not only reduces the burden on the welfare system, but also helps maintain order and security and creates more job opportunities for American workers.

On the other hand, President Joe Biden's open-door and humanitarian policies, although highly appreciated in terms of human rights, are considered ineffective in controlling immigration flows and dealing with security and economic challenges.

However, Donald Trump also faces serious legal issues. He has been convicted of criminally falsifying business records and is awaiting three more criminal trials, including charges related to his efforts to overturn the 2020 election results (he pressured election officials and promoted conspiracy theories about election fraud). These legal issues could significantly impact Donald Trump’s ability to run for office and his credibility.

Joe Biden dominates national political security

In the presidential race, although Donald Trump has advantages on the economy and immigration, President Joe Biden is rated higher on protecting democracy and dealing with political extremism. According to the poll, President Joe Biden received 39% support on this issue, compared to 33% for Donald Trump.

President Joe Biden is seen as having a more stable and sustainable approach in defending American democratic values, especially after the riots at the Capitol on January 6, 2021, when hundreds of Donald Trump's supporters stormed the Capitol building.

Joe Biden was quick to condemn the riots, pledged to defend democracy and the rule of law, and pushed for investigations and prosecutions of those involved in the riots. His administration has also stepped up efforts to combat political extremism.

In contrast, Donald Trump has been criticized for his role in inciting the riots, which has undermined his credibility with many voters. In this context, President Joe Biden has asserted his role as a leader capable of protecting and strengthening American democracy, attracting support from voters concerned about the country's democratic future.

Joe Biden draws from health care policy

Health care policy is one of President Joe Biden's strong points in the presidential race, with 40% support compared to 29% for Donald Trump. President Joe Biden has significant experience and achievements in this area, especially through his role as Vice President under Barack Obama.

One of Joe Biden's most important marks in the health care field is his active participation in promoting health reform called the Affordable Care Act (ACA), also known as Obamacare.

This law significantly expanded access to health insurance for Americans, giving millions of previously uninsured people access to health care. It not only provided health insurance to low-income people, but also protected people from being denied coverage due to pre-existing conditions.

President Joe Biden has continued to maintain and expand the achievements of the ACA. He has worked to reduce prescription drug costs, expand Medicaid in states that have not yet expanded, and improve the quality of health care. Joe Biden is also committed to protecting and strengthening health care protections for people with chronic diseases and health conditions.

Meanwhile, Donald Trump’s health care policies have been controversial. He and the Republican Party have repeatedly tried to repeal the ACA, but have failed. These efforts have raised concerns that millions of Americans could lose health insurance and other important protections provided by the ACA.

Approval ratings and other concerns faced

President Joe Biden’s approval rating has risen slightly to 37% from 36% in May. Despite the small improvement, Biden still faces many major challenges ahead. The increase may reflect his efforts to advance domestic and foreign policies, as well as small improvements in some economic and social areas.

One of the biggest concerns for Democratic voters is Joe Biden’s age. At 81, he is the oldest US president to ever hold the office. His age raises questions about his health and ability to lead in the next term. Many voters are concerned that Joe Biden’s health could affect his ability to carry out the heavy responsibilities of the presidency, especially in urgent situations that require quick decisions.

President Joe Biden also faces opposition within his own Democratic Party over his support for Israel’s war against Hamas, an issue that has been controversial internationally and domestically.

Some Democrats and voters say President Joe Biden’s stance on Israel is too biased and unfair to the Palestinians. They call for a more balanced approach, emphasizing the need to protect human rights and find a lasting peace solution to the Israel-Hamas conflict.

Weight from battleground states

A Reuters/Ipsos poll shows President Joe Biden and Donald Trump are roughly neck and neck in the presidential race nationally. But the battleground states that will ultimately decide the election paint a more complicated picture.

Florida is one of the most important battleground states with a large number of electoral votes. Donald Trump won Florida in the 2016 and 2020 elections. Current polls show Trump leading in this state, but the gap is not too big. Both candidates are focusing a lot of resources to win here.

Pennsylvania is another key battleground state. Joe Biden won the state by a fairly narrow margin in the 2020 election. Polls currently show Donald Trump with a slight advantage, but the race remains tight. President Joe Biden has focused on economic and worker policies to appeal to Pennsylvania voters.

Wisconsin is also a key battleground state. Donald Trump won the state in 2016, but Joe Biden won it back in 2020. Polls now show the two candidates in a tight race, with Donald Trump holding a slight advantage. Both campaigns are working to appeal to independents and undecided voters.

These battleground states are crucial to the US presidential election. Small differences in support in these states can determine the final outcome of the election. Both President Joe Biden and Donald Trump are focusing their efforts, resources, and strategies on winning these states, as they understand the importance of each electoral vote in achieving their ultimate goal.

While Donald Trump faces serious legal issues that could affect his candidacy and reputation, President Joe Biden is not immune to major challenges. This year's presidential race promises to be very tense and fierce, with each candidate having to overcome many difficulties to win.

The Reuters/Ipsos poll, conducted nationally and online, gathered responses from 1,019 U.S. adults, including 856 registered voters. The poll has a margin of error of 3.2 percentage points for all respondents and 3.5 percentage points for registered voters.
