The reason why coach Hoang Anh Tuan did not call up Vietnam's star players to attend ASIAD 19

According to the regulations of the 19th ASIAD men's football, each team is allowed to register 3 players over 24 years old. Coach Hoang Anh Tuan chose Do Sy Huy, Nham Manh Dung and Bui Tien Dung for these 3 positions (Nham Manh Dung was born in 2000 but is still considered a reinforcement, because the Vietnam Olympic team attending the 19th ASIAD prioritizes U20 players). However, in the end, only 2 of the 3 names above were included in the list.

"At the time of registration, there was another player, Bui Tien Dung, but due to paperwork problems, he could not register. The team was only able to register Do Sy Huy and Nham Manh Dung ," said coach Hoang Anh Tuan.

Both Sy Huy and Manh Dung are not on the list of the Vietnamese team. This is completely different from the 18th ASIAD 5 years ago. At that time, the Vietnamese Olympic team had Do Hung Dung, Nguyen Anh Duc and Nguyen Van Quyet - the top stars of the national team.

Coach Hoang Anh Tuan explained: "I also want to have many players, but Sy Huy Manh Dung has a higher ability to compete than other players. The V-League season is about to start, the time when Vietnam Olympic team competes in ASIAD, those players certainly cannot go. If I register them, the probability of participating in the tournament is low and we cannot change the list.

Before making a decision, I watched for a long time and determined the players who could meet the requirements. Those are the core positions of the Vietnam Olympic team: goalkeeper, center back and striker."

Mr. Hoang Anh Tuan revealed that he will bring the players to the early training camp to attend ASIAD. The rest are those who are competing in the 2024 U23 Asian qualifiers with U23 Vietnam.

" With 11 players, it is difficult to organize a friendly match. We do not have time to wait for the U23 players to finish the qualifying round before gathering. We focus on adjusting the errors so that the players can get into the rhythm when entering the tournament ," Mr. Hoang Anh Tuan shared.

"The goal of the Vietnam Football Federation is very clear to us. How to have the best players for the national team. My task is to give the national team head coach more options, not achievements. If we set achievement targets, we have to consider where we are in Asia. The direction of the VFF is to create conditions for young players to play more, to play on bigger fields to gain experience."

The Vietnam Olympic team is expected to have a full squad for training from September 13. On September 16, the team will travel to China before playing their opening match on September 19 against Olympic Mongolia. After that, the team will meet U23 Iran (September 21) and U23 Saudi Arabia (September 24).
