'Vietnam's most beautiful deep voice' leaves showbiz
Music lovers of the past decade affectionately called My Hanh 'Vietnam's most beautiful bass voice'.
She is a very rare true contralto, unlike mezzo-altos who are mistaken for bass voices like Cam Van, Thanh Lam, Ngoc Anh...
Some voices get darker as they get older, becoming deep voices like famous singer Thanh Thuy and singer Thu Phuong. As for My Hanh, she had a "deep voice" since she was little, which made her friends and people around her find strange.
My Hanh's voice is very unique: deep but clear, not hoarse at all, the sound emitted is smooth and soft like a cold stream. She can reach the lowest note Sì (B2), deeper than a man's voice.
For music connoisseurs, My Hanh's voice is a rarity. She sings music by teacher Thanh Tung, musician Phu Quang, Bao Chan... captivating the ears of many generations, but has never released an album.
Few people know that Vietnam's famous deep voice was once criticized by her husband as being 'sour and shrill'. My Hanh said that when she was young, she was a singer for the Hai Dang Song and Dance Troupe ( Khanh Hoa ), and only liked to sing high notes, and for every song she asked the band to play the highest note.
Singer My Hanh.
When she went to Ho Chi Minh City to meet her husband, for the first time someone frankly told her: "Sing in your own tone, don't jump so high, it sounds sour and harsh, very tiring."
The comment made My Hanh wake up, change her singing style, and thereby raise her singing to a new level.
My Hanh's peak was associated with the 2B Tea Room. Her husband founded the tea room, bringing every musical instrument and equipment from America, while his wife was the owner and lead singer.
Those were the days when she lived in burning sublimation: the most beautiful age of her career, singing with top bands (like Hoai Sa, Vinh Tam, A Din...) and with the best sound; singing with pure passion, not tainted by money or the pursuit of benefits.
The flow of music changed, the 2B Tea Room closed, the fire in My Hanh seemed to be doused with water. She once asked her husband not to drive across the familiar road...
For a long time, the singer lost her feeling for music. On subsequent stages, she did not reach the same level of sublimation as before.
When My Hanh passed that stage, the music flowed away from her generation of singers. She regretted that feeling like she regretted her youth, 'beautiful but gone, can't be regained'.
5 years, 10 years... and an artist's life
Over the past ten years, My Hanh has hardly changed, from her face, body to her lifestyle. At 52, she is still beautiful, elegant, has a slim body, and even looks younger with her current hairstyle.
She has not disappeared from the stage, occasionally appearing in some suitable programs. The person who can pull My Hanh back to the stage is her close friend - 'The Night Song' Khanh Du.

My Hanh has few friends because of her introverted lifestyle. Despite her personality, she sometimes feels lonely when she hides herself for so long that her colleagues don't remember her. Her name has long been absent from entertainment and festivals in the art world.
Originally an introvert, she has become more reserved as she gets older. In the past, when her husband took her to shows in a Rolls-Royce Phantom worth nearly 30 billion VND, she was unhappy when the public gossiped about her for days.
In America or Vietnam, My Hanh's life still revolves around the pleasures of baking, molding clay flowers, gardening, taking care of the house...
Many people say frankly "that's boring, terribly dull, how can you live a good life" , My Hanh finds it strange. She creates her own joy in life, not asking anyone to bring her happiness.
She didn't make a mistake when after 20 years, her husband, family and friends are still by her side. In particular, My Hanh's audience is small but so loyal that at any show she can look down, exclaim: "Oh, it's still the same old people" and then recite the names fluently.
"If I try to follow the crowd, I will forever be alone," My Hanh said.
The passing of the late singer Duy Quang in 2012 also reinforced My Hanh's outlook on life. During his lifetime, he was very close to the couple.
On the second anniversary of Duy Quang's death, My Hanh tried to find some news to share but couldn't find it. She suddenly understood that time had erased everything, no matter how famous he was.
Therefore, My Hanh appreciates the happy life she has more. In 24 years of marriage, she and her husband have lived in the villa in Su Van Hanh alley (District 10, Ho Chi Minh City) for 23 years.
My Hanh does not want life to change, no matter how much.
That year, the businessman bought this spacious villa for the couple to live among the reeds, listening to the sound of frogs at night.
He used to run a company that produced glass animals for the Walt Disney Corporation, but has now retired and handed the company over to his son.
The businessman fell in love with the deep-voiced singer because of his passion for the arts and they have been living happily ever since. My Hanh has 3 grandchildren, and every time she takes them out to play, everyone turns to look at the young grandmother.
Sometimes My Hanh feels that at 52 years old, she still doesn't know how to do many things because she lives under the protection and care of her husband. Her friends remind her: "You are spoiled by your husband. If he is no longer around, how will you survive when you don't even know how to drive?"
But for the singer, happiness is fate. She wants to live happily every day she has instead of worrying about the future and spending the rest of her life in Da Lat or Nha Trang. She does not fit in with American culture, so even though her husband is Vietnamese-American and has lived in the US for more than ten years, he has not applied for a permanent resident card.
My Hanh said that in 5 years, 10 years or many years from now, she still hopes that her current life will not change. As long as she is satisfied with her life, she does not want to add or subtract anything.
