An immigration lawyer in the US said many immigrants voluntarily left the country right before President-elect Donald Trump took office for a second term.
US Border Patrol agents and workers sealed an illegal tunnel in the border area with Mexico on January 16 as the US prepares to crack down on illegal immigrants.
The Hill newspaper reported on January 18 that some immigrants voluntarily chose to leave the United States before President-elect Donald Trump took office, because he announced a tough policy on illegal immigration.
Immigration attorney Rolando Vazquez said some of his clients who immigrated to the US under President Joe Biden are now choosing to return home, fearing deportation after Trump takes office on January 20.
During the election campaign, Mr. Trump repeatedly declared that he would deport illegal immigrants en masse if he was elected.

The Wall Street Journal on January 18 quoted sources as saying that the new administration plans to immediately strengthen enforcement of immigration policies after taking office.
"We're going to be doing operations all over the country. You're going to see arrests in New York City and Miami," the source said. In Chicago, Illinois, the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency plans to deploy 100 to 200 people to conduct operations for a week.
Meanwhile, it is not just Mr Trump's deportation plans that are influencing some people's decisions to leave the US.
Vazquez said Mexico is now open to taking in deportees who are not Mexican citizens. The move affects many immigrants from South American countries that have policies against accepting deportation flights from the United States but can accept them from Mexico.
"This causes many immigrants to leave voluntarily, knowing that they will be deported back to their home country or deported back to Mexico. Most of them do not want to stay in Mexico," said Mr. Vazquez.
Meanwhile, some sources in Mexico say that those deported by the US could face exploitation and kidnapping by criminal gangs and human traffickers. It is unclear whether Mexico has any plans to protect these people.
In another development, sources said that Mr. Trump will make his first visit to Los Angeles (California) after taking office, where wildfires have raged and killed at least 27 people.
He is scheduled to visit Los Angeles next weekend. The president-elect has criticized California Democratic leaders, including Governor Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, for their response to the wildfires.
Meanwhile, Mr. Newsom is expected to follow in the footsteps of many Republican governors and order the American flag to be flown at half-staff in the state on the day of Mr. Trump's inauguration, even though President Joe Biden has ordered flags to be flown at half-staff to honor the late President Jimmy Carter on the same day.
