According to the ranking of AI and machine learning development platform Hugging Face, 3 out of 4 major Chinese language models (LLMs) in the world's top 10 belong to the Tongyi Qianwen (Qwen) platform developed by Alibaba.

Alibaba's Qwen-72B-Instruct LLM, with 72 billion parameters, topped the list with an average score of 43.02 across six criteria.

“Qwen-72B-Instruct is leading Chinese open models in overall scores,” Hugging Face co-founder and CEO Clement Delangue said in a post on social network X (Twitter).

Accordingly, the above Qwen platform model is recognized for achieving “mathematical performance, deep reasoning and knowledge”.

Meanwhile, Alibaba's Qwen-72B and Qwen1.5-110B models ranked 3rd and 10th, respectively. According to Hugging Face, the rankings are expected to change over time as more LLMs are evaluated.

Beijing-based startup 01.AI's Yi-1.5-34B-Chat model was ranked 7th. The company was founded in 2023 by renowned venture capitalist Lee Kai-fu, who was formerly the president of Google China.

The ranking shows Alibaba’s rapid progress in open-source AI. Third-party developers have public access to the program’s source code, allowing them to modify or share LLM’s design. Open-source technologies have contributed greatly to China’s burgeoning tech industry over the past few decades.

The AI model from Facebook parent company Meta Platforms ranked second behind Alibaba in Hugging Face's top 10 list. Microsoft's LLM ranked sixth.

Hugging Face says its method of ranking AI models has added more metrics, such as the ability to handle complex problems of around 1,000 words in length with “stable performance.”

Hugging Face's rankings focus only on open-source programs, not taking into account proprietary advanced LLMs like GPT from OpenAI.

According to another ranking conducted by the University of California, Berkeley and the Large Model Systems Consortium (LMSYS Chatbot Arena), GPT-4o is at the top of the world, while Alibaba's Qwen2-72B-Instruct is ranked 19th.
