The research was carried out by a team of scientists from Aston University (UK) led by Professor Richard Martin. In the laboratory, the researchers tested a new cancer treatment method using bioglass material coated with gallium metal to kill bone cancer cells.

Scientists have invented a groundbreaking new method that can kill 99% of cancer tumor cells without destroying normal cells.

Bioactive glass, a filling material that can bond with tissue and improve the strength of bones and teeth, has been combined with the metal gallium to create a potential treatment for bone cancer.

Gallium is highly toxic and researchers found that "greedy" cancer cells would absorb it and destroy themselves, without affecting healthy cells.

The results were astonishing, with up to 99% of bone cancer tumor cells destroyed and even diseased bones able to regenerate, according to the medical website Medical Express.

Remarkably, when the researchers cultured the bioactive glass in simulated body fluids and after 7 days, they detected early stages of bone formation.

The findings could lead to more effective treatments with fewer side effects, and could even regenerate diseased bones, Professor Martin said.

Gallium is highly toxic and research has found that "greedy" cancer cells will absorb it and destroy themselves, without affecting healthy cells.

When observing the glass, we could see the formation of an amorphous calcium phosphate/hydroxy apatite layer on the surface of the bioactive glass particles, indicating bone growth.

Dr Lucas Souza, Head of the Dubrowsky Regenerative Medicine Laboratory at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital, who collaborated with Professor Martin, said: “Further testing is needed on the safety and efficacy of these biomaterials, but the initial results are really promising.

Diagnostic treatments for bone cancer are still very limited and there is much we do not understand. Research like this is important to help develop new drugs and treatments, according to Medical Express.
