Smart rings are one of the most important areas in the market today, so the fact that Apple has not been able to launch any products raises questions about the reason. Recently, an expert in the field of smart rings has lifted the veil on this mystery, even confirming that Apple will not be able to launch such a product.
Apple's difficulty with smart rings
Tom Hale, CEO of Oura, one of the pioneers in the smart ring space, said that Apple may be considering a relationship between a smart ring and a smartwatch in its ecosystem. The two products may not be entirely complementary, and a smart ring could cannibalize Apple Watch sales due to similar features.
Apple’s vision is to create devices that offer a complete and unique experience. Currently, the Apple Watch is the leader in health and fitness tracking, and integrates well with the Apple ecosystem. Smart rings may offer less functionality and be seen as a “ lesser version” of the watch, partly due to their smaller size.
Bloomberg analyst Mark Gurman also confirmed that Apple is not currently developing a ring. Designing a device that can measure health parameters and record physical activity within the limited space of a ring is a major challenge.
According to Hale, creating such a product is “difficult” and only a handful of companies like Oura have been able to succeed in this area, implying that Apple is still not quite ready to create a satisfactory smart ring.
Of course, Apple is typically cautious about adopting new technology. While the company has filed multiple patents related to smart rings, this does not guarantee that the product will ever be developed and released. In fact, Apple often files patents for technologies that it does not necessarily put into production, as part of its R&D strategy.
For the above reasons, we probably won't see a smart ring called Apple iRing anytime soon.
