In addition, three Nicaraguan organizations, including the national police, the Supreme Electoral Council, and the Telecommunications Institute, were also added to the sanctions list, making it illegal for EU citizens and businesses to finance them.

The sanctions were initially imposed in 2019 in response to human rights allegations over the 2018 crackdown on anti-government protests, which left more than 300 people dead.

Nicaraguan authorities expelled more than 100 political prisoners in September and have taken a tough stance against anti-government figures since 2018, charging them with charges such as conspiracy and treason, stripping many of them of their citizenship.
