On August 14, the ruling coalition in Thailand led by the Pheu Thai Party (Pheu Thai) selected a prime minister candidate, after Mr. Srettha Thavisin was dismissed from the position of Prime Minister earlier the same day.

The candidate chosen by Pheu Thai is Mr. Chaikasem Nitisiri, born on August 26, 1948, holding the rank of Assistant Professor, with a Bachelor of Laws degree from Chulalongkorn University (Thailand) and a Master of Laws degree from Columbia University, USA.

In his political career, Mr. Chaikasem was an advisor to Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin, Chairman of the Political and Strategic Steering Committee, former Minister of Justice and advisor to the Emergency Management Center under the administration of Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra.

In the 2019 and 2023 general elections, Mr. Chaikasem was nominated as one of the Pheu Thai Party's prime ministerial candidates.

Previously, President of the Thai National Assembly Wan Muhamad Noor Matha announced that he would convene a plenary session of the House of Representatives at 10:00 a.m. on August 16 to elect a new Prime Minister.

According to Thai election law, a candidate to be elected Prime Minister must win the support of more than half of the total members of the House of Representatives, equivalent to 247 out of 493 lawmakers. Meanwhile, the 11-party ruling coalition led by the Pheu Thai Party currently holds 314 seats in the House of Representatives.

After the Pheu Thai party announced its nomination, Reuters news agency reported that Mr. Santi Promphat, a senior member of the Palang Pracharat Party, announced that the party would support Pheu Thai candidates.

The People's State Power Party, which is pro-military, is the third largest party in the coalition with 40 seats in the lower house.

Bhumjaithai Party leader Anutin Charnvirakul also said his party - the second largest in the ruling coalition - would support Pheu Thai's prime ministerial candidate.

However, the Bangkok Post reported that the leader of the newly established People's Party (PP) in Thailand, Natthaphong Ruengpanyawut, announced that he would continue to lead the opposition as the largest party in the National Assembly and would not vote for Pheu Thai's Chaikasem Nitisiri in the August 16 meeting of the House of Representatives.

The People's Party is the latest incarnation of the March Forward Party (MFP), which was dissolved by Thailand's Constitutional Court last week for allegedly endangering the constitutional monarchy and national security.

On August 14, the Constitutional Court ruled that Mr. Srettha Thavisin seriously violated ethical standards when appointing former lawyer Pichit Chuenban, who had been sentenced to prison, as Minister of the Prime Minister's Office.

The ruling resulted in Mr Srettha being removed as Prime Minister after less than a year in office and also ending all cabinet positions.
