EURO round of 16 schedule today: Netherlands faces challenges from Romania, Austria faces difficulties

Romania is eager to stop the "Orange tornado"

Romania will be looking to spring another surprise when they face the Netherlands in the last 16, which kicks off at 11pm on July 2. Edward Iordanescu's side topped Group E to book a place in the last 16 against the Netherlands, who finished third in Group D.

For the first time in the history of the men's EURO, all four teams in a group finished level on points, with Romania, Ukraine, Belgium and Slovakia all on four points. However, a three-goal win over Ukraine and a draw with Slovakia in the final match saw Romania top the group, ending a 24-year run of being eliminated from the group stage of a major tournament.

However, the Tricolours (Romania's nickname) winning just one of their last seven matches in all competitions does not give them much optimism. But their opponents the Netherlands are also not in good form.

After relying on striker Wout Weghorst to complete a comeback against Poland, Ronald Koeman's side suffered a controversial disallowed goal from Xavi Simons in a goalless stalemate with France. The 'Orange Storm' then surprisingly fell 2-3 to Austria in the final round and qualified as one of the four best third-placed teams.

However, the Dutch team will probably be satisfied with... a poor performance in the group stage, having avoided a draw that could have seen them face Belgium, Spain, Germany and Portugal. And with Italy out, the Dutch have a better chance of advancing further in the tournament.

The Netherlands had suffered just one defeat in their previous 13 matches against Romania - a 0-1 loss in qualifying for EURO 2008 - but they avenged that defeat with a 2-0 win in that year's finals.

Great opportunity for Austria and Türkiye

EURO 2024 dark horses Austria and Türkiye will meet in Leipzig in the round of 16 at 2am on July 3. The first meeting at their first major tournament will give them a chance to reach the quarter-finals, where they will face either the Netherlands or Romania.

Heading into neighbouring Germany as one of Europe's most in-form sides, Austria qualified for the last 16 as Group D winners after beating the Netherlands 3-2 in a thrilling final game at Berlin's Olympiastadion. Despite being drawn in a tough group alongside the Netherlands and world runners-up France, Ralf Rangnick's side picked up six points to top the group.

Austria impresses in group stage

Austria have failed to get out of the group stage at two EUROs – as hosts in 2008, and again eight years later – so to have achieved this is a remarkable feat. Rangnick’s energetic side are trying to reach their first ever EURO quarter-final, and recent results suggest they could be ready to make a breakthrough. They have won 14 of their last 19 games and lost just two.

Austria beat Türkiye 6-1 in Vienna in the recent international tournament. However, in competitive encounters, Türkiye are unbeaten in their last five matches against Austria and have kept a clean sheet.

Türkiye reached the round of 16 with a dramatic 2-1 win over the Czech Republic in the final match of Group F. Vincenzo Montella's team finished second in the group.

Montella's young squad - who averaged the second youngest starting XI throughout the group stage - have reached the last 16 for the first time since 2008. Now their EURO 2024 adventure continues, with the support of thousands of Turkish migrants who have settled in Germany over the past 60 years.
