Vietnamese girls confident before friendly tournament in China
Although the two matches are only friendly, they will be very valuable for coach Mai Duc Chung and his team at this time. Facing strong teams is an opportunity for the Vietnamese women's team to assemble the squad, test tactics, evaluate personnel and know where they currently stand, especially in the context that the Vietnamese women's team is entering a period of generational transition.
"This team has many young faces, gathered to prepare for important tournaments in 2025. From here, the coaching staff and the players themselves will realize what is lacking to improve for next year, when participating in 3 important playgrounds including the 2026 Asian Cup qualifiers, the 2025 Southeast Asian Women's Football Championship and the 33rd SEA Games. Direct opponents of Vietnamese women's football are making strong investments, including in the Southeast Asian region, such as the Philippines and Singapore naturalizing players. In the Asian region, in addition to Japan, South Korea, China, Australia, now there are also the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, Uzbekistan, Iran... that will compete with Vietnam. Therefore, the Vietnamese women's team needs a generation of young players to work alongside their seniors to improve their performance. At this friendly tournament in China, we will arrange for young players to have the opportunity to learn and progress," said Mr. Mai Duc Chung.
" DEBT COLLECTION" FROM ZBEKISTAN ?
On the FIFA rankings, the Vietnamese women's team is ranked 37th in the world, 11 places higher than the Uzbekistan women's team. That's the theory, but the Central Asian representative is a tough opponent for coach Mai Duc Chung and his team. The last time the two teams met was in the 2024 Paris Olympic qualifiers in October 2023. At that time, Huynh Nhu and her teammates lost 0-1 and lost the ticket to the next round to their opponents. The match this afternoon is an opportunity for the Vietnamese women's team to "get revenge" against Uzbekistan.
Regarding the opponent in the opening match, coach Mai Duc Chung commented: "Uzbekistan women's football has progressed rapidly, the players are tall, strong and physically fit. At this time, Uzbekistan is on par with the Vietnamese women's team. This is an opponent we can compete with in the Asian region. The upcoming matches will help the Vietnamese women's team compete and gain a lot of experience."
The time for the Vietnamese women's team to gather to prepare for the friendly tournament in China is not long (from October 9). Therefore, in order to compete with teams in good physical condition in this tournament, in addition to honing tactics, the coaching staff has trained the Vietnamese women's players physically. "The team still needs to improve a lot, especially in terms of physical strength. We are short and weak physically. If we want to meet the requirements of better competition, we need to improve our physical strength," Mr. Chung added.
Huynh Nhu is absent.
During the gathering and international friendly tournament in China, the Vietnamese women's team had two notable absences: striker Huynh Nhu and winger Nguyen Thi Thanh Nha. Of these, Huynh Nhu did not participate because she is focusing on preparing for some upcoming personal plans.
