UN accuses Israel of violating ceasefire, Hezbollah loses patience

(CLO) On January 4, the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) condemned Israel for violating the ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah that took effect on November 27, 2024.

At the same time, Hezbollah leader Naim Qassem warned that the group's patience with Israeli violations would not last, despite the ceasefire agreement's 60-day implementation period.

The fragile ceasefire has seen a series of alleged violations from both sides. UNIFIL said Saturday morning that peacekeepers observed an Israeli army bulldozer destroying a blue barrel – marking the disengagement line between Lebanon and Israel – in the Labbouneh area. A Lebanese Armed Forces observation tower, located right next to the UNIFIL position, was also destroyed.

"The deliberate destruction by military forces of clearly identifiable UNIFIL assets and Lebanese Armed Forces infrastructure is a flagrant violation of Resolution 1701 and international law," UNIFIL said in a statement.

UNIFIL calls on all parties to avoid actions, including the destruction of civilian property and infrastructure, that could undermine the cessation of hostilities. Under the ceasefire agreement, Lebanese troops are deployed alongside peacekeepers in the south while Israeli troops withdraw within 60 days. At the same time, Hezbollah must withdraw its forces north of the Litani River (about 30km from the border) and dismantle all remaining military infrastructure in the southern area.

In late December, UNIFIL expressed concern over continued damage caused by the Israeli military in southern Lebanon. Meanwhile, the Israeli military stated that recent airstrikes aimed to eliminate threats to Israel "in accordance with the understandings of the ceasefire agreement".
