Unemployed workers get low-interest loans to start businesses

Ho Chi Minh City: Workers who have lost their jobs and want to change their business direction will be supported with loans of up to 100 million VND, with low interest rates, according to the leader of Binh Tan district.

The information was given by Ms. Le Thi Ngoc Dung, Vice Chairman of Binh Tan District People's Committee, at the program "People ask, government answers " with the topic "Vocational training and job introduction", on the morning of September 10.

Present at the program, worker Le Ha My Hong, working at Kyung Rhim Vina Co., Ltd. (Binh Tan District), said that due to the impact of the epidemic and economic difficulties, many businesses have reduced production and cut labor. The female worker said she was very worried and asked the government to have support solutions, especially in areas with a large labor force like Binh Tan.

Responding to workers, Ms. Dung said that Binh Tan district has nearly 800,000 people, of which more than 65% are of working age. Since the beginning of the year, many businesses in the area have reduced their workforce, with one company cutting more than 9,000 workers. The locality has had many solutions to support workers such as introducing new jobs and supporting workers in vocational training.

"Workers who want to change their business direction will receive capital support," said Ms. Dung, adding that in the first 6 months of the year, 1,123 people were able to borrow more than 100 billion VND to create jobs for themselves and their families.

Mr. Tran Chanh Tuan, Director of the Transaction Office of the Social Policy Bank in Binh Tan District, said that workers who want to borrow capital for production, business, processing, service provision, etc. should contact the head of the loan group in their place of residence for guidance. The lending is entrusted to four organizations including the Women's Union, Farmers' Union, Veterans' Union, and Youth Union.

"Workers who clearly identify the purpose of the loan as doing business or creating their own jobs will receive disbursement," said Mr. Tuan. Currently, the loan interest rate is 7.92%/year, lower than the market. The maximum loan amount is 100 million VND.

In addition, to support unemployed workers, Mr. Nguyen Thanh Do, Head of the Legal Policy Department (Ho Chi Minh City Labor Federation), said that the union organization is continuing to implement a cash support package of 1-3 million VND to workers.

Regarding capital support for workers, CEP Microfinance Organization (under the Ho Chi Minh City Labor Federation) is implementing low-interest loan programs for workers with a total turnover of more than 50,000 billion VND in 5 years. Workers can go through the trade union at the enterprise, workers can also contact CEP staff at their place of residence to receive loan support. In the first 8 months of the year, more than 158,000 workers have borrowed with an outstanding loan of more than 2,725 billion VND.

At the program, a representative of Linh Pang Company said that for workers who want to change careers, the company can support free nail training and employment. After mastering the profession, workers can open their own salons and work at home, which is suitable for the wishes of many female workers who want to have income while still taking care of their families.

According to the Ho Chi Minh City Employment Service Center, as of the end of August, more than 116,000 people who lost their jobs applied for unemployment benefits, an increase of 10% over the same period last year. More than 429,000 people reported looking for jobs every month.
