This afternoon, June 20, Duc Giang General Hospital (Hanoi) said that doctors from the hospital's Department of Nephrology and Urology are treating   male   The patient is Mr. TTA (71 years old, in Hanoi) who was admitted to the hospital in a state of extreme fatigue, vomiting when eating and drinking. The patient's test results showed acute kidney failure.

The male patient with acute kidney failure being treated at Duc Giang General Hospital is recovering.

According to the patient’s family, 3 days before being admitted to the hospital, the patient went to work in the fields from 7am to noon, in hot weather. During this time, the patient only brought 500ml of water to drink.

The next day, the patient experienced fatigue, discomfort, and vomiting when eating and drinking water. His family took him to a nearby medical facility for monitoring and treatment. There, test results showed that the patient had increased blood urea and creatinine and was diagnosed with acute kidney failure due to dehydration.

After one day of treatment, the patient developed complications of acute renal failure, which was hyperkalemia (blood potassium was 6.7 µmol/l, compared to the normal index of 3.5 - 5 mmol/l), and was expected to require dialysis, so he was transferred to the Department of Nephrology - Urology, Duc Giang General Hospital for continued treatment.

At Duc Giang General Hospital, after 2 days of treatment, the patient's condition is gradually stabilizing, and kidney function is showing signs of recovery.

According to Dr. Nguyen Van Tuyen, Head of the Department of Nephrology - Urology, Duc Giang General Hospital, patients with acute kidney failure will urinate more during the recovery period. Therefore, during this period, doctors must closely monitor the patient's urination to have a suitable plan for rehydration and electrolyte replacement. If not enough fluid and electrolytes are replenished during this period, the patient is at risk of electrolyte imbalance, dehydration, and health hazards.

"Currently, the patient can excrete 5 liters of urine per day. The patient needs to be monitored and compensated with an equivalent amount of fluid. If the condition improves, the patient will be discharged in the next few days," said Dr. Tuyen.

Regarding the cause of acute kidney failure in the above patient, Dr. Tuyen noted that hot weather causes the body to lose a lot of water and electrolytes. If not properly rehydrated, it will lead to a decrease in circulating volume. This means a decrease in blood supply to tissues and organs, especially the kidneys, which will cause acute kidney failure.

According to Dr. Tuyen, when the weather is hot, if you only work in a normal environment, not too hard, you may need to replenish 3-4 liters of water each day. In the case of having to work in a harsh hot environment like the patient mentioned above, the amount of water must be more. Meanwhile, this 71-year-old male patient only drank 500 ml of water throughout the morning, leading to severe dehydration.

According to Duc Giang General Hospital, peak heat waves pose a potential risk of increased acute kidney failure due to dehydration. In fact, in 2023, during the two peak months of heat waves, the Department of Nephrology and Urology admitted 5 patients with acute kidney failure due to dehydration.

Doctors recommend that in the current hot weather conditions, people need to ensure adequate water intake and pay attention to electrolyte replacement to avoid health complications, especially the risk of acute kidney failure.
