Many world leaders sent condolences and praised former Italian Prime Minister Berlusconi, who has just died at the age of 86, as "a fighter".

"Silvio Berlusconi was above all a fighter, a man who was never afraid to defend his beliefs. It was that courage and determination that made him one of the most influential people in the country's history," Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said in a statement today.

Ms Meloni said Italy had "fought together, experienced many victories and defeats" with Mr Berlusconi. "We will continue to achieve the goals we set together. Farewell Silvio," she said.

Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, a long-time ally of Mr Berlusconi, thanked the former prime minister and called the event "infinitely sad".

AC Milan, owned by Mr Berlusconi from 1986 to 2017, sent condolences to the former prime minister's family and praised the "unforgettable President of the Rossoneri". "Thank you, President. You will always be with us," the club said in a statement.

Russian President Vladimir Putin called former Prime Minister Berlusconi a "close friend and outstanding politician" in a condolence message released by the Kremlin. "I have always admired his wisdom, as well as his ability to strike a balance and make far-sighted decisions even in the most difficult situations," Putin said.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said "a great warrior has passed away".

"A father, businessman, MEP, Prime Minister, MEP. He left an unforgettable mark. Thank you Silvio," said European Parliament President Roberta Metsola.

Former Prime Minister Berlusconi died at San Raffaele hospital in Milan, after six weeks of treatment for a lung infection related to leukemia.

He served as prime minister of Italy three times, from 1994-1995, 2001-2006 and 2008-2011, for a total of nine years in power. He was elected prime minister on economic promises, but had to resign when the debt crisis engulfed Italy.

His influence is not only in politics, but also in the media and sports, especially football. Berlusconi bought AC Milan in 1986, saving them from bankruptcy. The more than 30 years under Berlusconi's ownership are considered the most glorious period in AC Milan's history.

Forbes magazine once ranked Berlusconi as the 188th richest person in the world with a fortune of 6.2 billion USD. From his success in business and fame in football, he moved into politics, founding the Forza Italia party in 1993 and becoming one of the most famous politicians in the country's history.
