According to Reuters, Taiwanese leader Tsai Ing-wen on May 20 declared that she would maintain the status quo of peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait amid China's increasing military pressure on the island.

Taiwan will not provoke and will not succumb to Chinese pressure, Tsai said in a speech at her office in Taipei to mark her seventh year in power.

“War is not an option,” Tsai said. “Maintaining the status quo of peace and stability is the consensus of the world and Taiwan,” she declared.

Taiwan's leader said Taiwan "will stand together with communities around the world to work together to reduce risks."

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said G7 leaders at the Hiroshima summit agreed that they are seeking a peaceful solution to the Taiwan issue.

Tsai said Taiwanese officials are also in talks with the administration of US President Joe Biden about providing $500 million in arms aid to the island, which she said would address delays in arms deliveries due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Tsai also stressed the importance of Taiwan, which produces most of the world's advanced semiconductor chips, in the global supply chain. Tsai pledged to keep the most advanced chip technology and research and development centers in Taiwan.

Taiwan is preparing for a crucial leadership election in mid-January 2024, and tensions with China are at the top of the agenda.
