On November 28, the People's Court of Dak Lak province held a first-instance trial and sentenced Nguyen Thi Hoa (39 years old, residing in Buon Ma Thuot City, Dak Lak) to life in prison for trafficking in persons under 16 years old and 15 years in prison for human trafficking, with a combined sentence of life in prison.
Also at the trial, nine other defendants in the case were sentenced to 5-30 years in prison for the above crimes.
According to the indictment, Nguyen Thi Hoa rented a karaoke bar on Y Ngong Street, Buon Ma Thuot City, and often called female employees to serve customers at their request. Each time, the female employees served customers for about 2 hours, and were paid from 300,000 to 500,000 VND per person.
Seeing that having female employees would bring high profits, Hoa contacted a number of people to recruit and used social networks to post job vacancies for many female employees.
The defendants at trial
Hoa rented a house in Buon Ma Thuot City for the female employees to live and work; at the same time, she hired young men to pick them up, manage, and supervise them, so that the female employees would not escape.
Female employees were recruited to sing karaoke and drink with customers. Each time they served a customer, the employees were paid a "tip" that had to be given to Hoa.
Then, this money is added up at the end of the month to be divided between Hoa and the female employees at a ratio of 50/50. Hoa also deducts a portion of the income from the female employees to pay the male employees from 4 to 8 million VND/person/month.
From 2022 to March 2023, Hoa and his accomplices bought and sold 11 girls aged 15-18 in many provinces and cities across the country for prices ranging from 4-35 million VND.
