Located about 20km west of Hanoi city center, Tay Tuu flower village has a long tradition of flower growing. With a total area of over 200 hectares, this place currently grows and supplies many different types of flowers for the inner city such as chrysanthemums, roses, dahlias, etc.
In addition, to expand the flower growing area to meet the demand during peak seasons, people also rent more land in neighboring areas such as Thuong Mo, Ha Mo, Cat Que, Duong Lieu, and even Son Tay.
Every year, in the 10th and 11th lunar months, Tay Tu people are busy sowing seeds, pruning buds, and watering flowers with the expectation of a good Tet flower crop, bringing high economic value.
Having many years of experience growing chrysanthemums, Mr. Nguyen Van Binh (43 years old, Bac Tu Liem district) said that the flower beds that bloom early are used for the New Year, while the newly sown seeds must wait until the Lunar New Year to be harvested.
According to Mr. Binh, during the Tet season, the price of chrysanthemums will be higher than usual due to high demand. Specifically, the price for wholesale traders is about 80,000 - 100,000 VND/50 flowers. Meanwhile, the price at traditional flower markets is about 2,000 - 4,000 VND/flower.
Sharing about the process of caring for this flower variety, garden owner Nguyen Van Binh said: "Besides the technical factors of how to sow seeds and prune buds, the important factor that affects the flower crop well or badly is the weather.
Even though each bed is covered with a sheet, heavy rain can cause the flowers to become waterlogged and die. That is why, in addition to planting and care techniques, the decisive factor is the weather. If the weather is nice, sunny, warm, and humid, the flowers will bloom more easily.
Meanwhile, Ms. Nguyen Thi Hang (born in 1982, owner of a chrysanthemum garden in Tay Tuu village) added: "To bring high-quality products to the market, I take advantage of the morning to go to the garden to check them all. Small chrysanthemums that do not meet the standards must be picked to focus on growing large, beautiful main buds."
According to research, it takes about 3-4 months for chrysanthemum farmers to harvest a crop. Depending on the weather, care must be flexible and appropriate to the actual situation.
As for roses, according to some farmers, they can only be planted until April of the following year. When the flowers are about to bloom, growers will wrap the flowers in layers of newspaper.
Explaining the above action, a flower grower here said: "Wrapping the flowers is very necessary, not only does it help the flowers bloom evenly and beautifully, but it is also the secret to prolonging the blooming time."
Each rose that meets the requirements will be cut by the people to sell for only 3 - 4 thousand VND/flower. At this time, Tay Tuu flower growers are hoping for favorable weather to sell before Tet and get a good price.
