For the 5th time coming to Vietnam, President Putin paid a state visit at the invitation of the General Secretary.

President Putin has visited Vietnam four times in the past 24 years and the fifth time on June 19 and 20 was a state visit, at the invitation of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong.

June 19 and 20 will mark the fifth time Russian President Vladimir Putin has visited Vietnam as head of state. This is also his second state visit to Vietnam since 2000.

In modern Vietnamese history, President Putin is one of the heads of state who visited Vietnam many times while in office.

President Putin's first visit to Vietnam took place from February 28 to March 2, 2001 , when Russia-Vietnam relations had just entered the 21st century.

During this visit, President Putin andPresident Tran Duc Luong issued a joint statement establishing the Vietnam-Russia strategic partnership. The two sides also signed documents to expand cooperation in the field of oil and gas exploitation and a number of other fields.

The two leaders also identified promising economic cooperation directions, especially in electric power, agro-industrial complexes, light industry, etc.

During this visit, President Putin also had notable activities such as visiting the Temple of Literature and meeting Vietnamese people who studied in Russia.

Five years after his first visit to Vietnam, at the invitation of President Nguyen Minh Triet, on November 20, 2006 , President Putin officially visited Vietnam after attending the APEC summit held in Hanoi.

During this visit, President Putin had a series of meetings with high-ranking Vietnamese leaders such as General Secretary Nong Duc Manh, President Nguyen Minh Triet, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung and National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Phu Trong.

The two sides discussed many issues of mutual concern, including promoting cooperation in economics, energy, tourism, education, science and technology...

Many cooperation agreements on banking, oil and gas, and tourism between the two countries were signed in the presence of President Putin and President Nguyen Minh Triet.

President Putin returned to Vietnam on November 12, 2013 on his first state visit at the invitation of President Truong Tan Sang.

A few days before the visit, on November 7, 2013 in St. Petersburg (Russia), the first submarine named "Hanoi" in the contract to supply 6 submarines of Project 636 was handed over to Russia.

The visit comes just a year after the two countries upgraded their relationship to the highest level of Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

In Hanoi, President Putin held talks with President Truong Tan Sang, met with General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong and Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung.

The Russian leader also laid wreaths at the Monument to Heroes and Martyrs and at the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum.

In addition to the joint statement on strengthening the Vietnam-Russia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, together with President Truong Tan Sang, President Putin witnessed the signing of a series of important cooperation documents in many fields to strengthen cooperation in politics, defense, trade and energy.

On November 10, 2017, President Putin went to Da Nang to attend the APEC Summit and did not go to Hanoi. However, President Putin still had a bilateral meeting with President Tran Dai Quang.

The Russian leader also sympathized with the Vietnamese people about the damage caused by storm No. 12, and highly appreciated Vietnam's proactiveness and positivity in its role as host of APEC 2017.

On this occasion, the two sides agreed to issue a joint statement on cooperation in the field of ensuring international information security.

According to the announcement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, President Putin's upcoming state visit takes place at the invitation of General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam Nguyen Phu Trong. The trip takes place in the first year of President Putin's new presidential term, demonstrating his importance to the Vietnam-Russia relationship. Therefore, this visit is expected to extend the list of important milestones in the Vietnam-Russia relationship. President Putin's presence in Vietnam also takes place on the occasion of the two countries celebrating the 30th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty on the basic principles of friendly relations between the Socialist Republic of Vietnam and the Russian Federation. This is also an opportunity for the leaders of the two countries to meet, discuss, and agree on important issues and strategic directions for the future, including activities to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations in 2025.
