While many markets around the world have yet to release full-year 2023 sales data, preliminary data compiled by JATO Dynamics and Car Industry Analysis suggests the Tesla Model Y has taken the crown. Final data will be released in the second quarter.

According to preliminary statistics, Tesla Model Y is the world's best-selling car model in 2023 (Illustration: Motor1).

Currently JATO Dynamics and Car Industry Analysis only have data for the following markets: US, Canada, most of Europe, China, Australia, New Zealand, major markets in Latin America, many markets in Southeast Asia, Russia, Türkiye and Israel.

Along with that are sales estimates for the markets: Middle East, North Africa, Japan, South Africa, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Thailand, Philippines, and some smaller market areas.

In total, preliminary statistics show that Tesla Model Y sales will reach 1.23 million vehicles in 2023, up 64% compared to 2022. Although lower than the growth in 2022 compared to 2021 (up 91%), 2023 sales will probably increase strongly enough to put Tesla Model Y on the throne.

"Sales Queen" in Europe and China

These are also the two largest electric vehicle markets in the world. According to statistics from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, more than 456,000 Tesla Model Ys were delivered to customers in China in 2023, an increase of 45%.

Meanwhile, in Europe, the Model Y has surpassed long-time bestsellers like the Dacia Sandero, Peugeot 208, and Volkswagen T-Roc. Data from 30 markets shows that the all-electric model has sold more than 255,000 units, 19,000 more than the second-best-selling model, the Sandero.

Based on Tesla's official data, the Model Y will account for two-thirds of the company's total sales in 2023.

Toyota lost the throne

The impressive results of the Model Y are bad news for Toyota, specifically the RAV4 and Corolla. These two models have been competing for the global sales crown for many years. Toyota's global presence and the competitiveness of the RAV4 and Corolla have helped them stay in the top position.

However, neither competes in the all-electric segment that is growing rapidly around the world. Instead, Toyota has focused on hybrid technology. And while this strategy has brought in good sales for the company, it hasn’t been enough to drive growth in markets like China and Europe.

Toyota, however, isn’t far behind. Preliminary statistics show the Toyota RAV4 coming in second, with sales of 1.07 million units. The current generation of the SUV will turn six in March, making it one year older than the Model Y.

Toyota Corolla ranked third, with global sales reaching 1.01 million vehicles.
