Ho Chi Minh City A 26-year-old man had a premarital health check-up, and the test showed that his sperm was very low and had poor mobility. Worried that it would affect his happiness, he had another test, and the results were normal.
On January 26, Dr. Tra Anh Duy, Men's Health Center, said the reason for the two completely opposite results was because at the time of the first test at a medical facility, the patient had just ejaculated a day before and had previously had a sore throat, fever, and cough.
Meanwhile, according to the World Health Organization (WHO) standards in 2021 - the latest standards, men must abstain from ejaculation for 2-7 days before taking a semen test, and must not drink alcohol, beer, or smoke cigarettes... during that time. If you are suffering from acute illnesses, insomnia, mental stress, fatigue, or are being treated for a chronic disease, you must notify your doctor to consider the appropriate time.
The young man was ordered by Dr. Duy to retest his semen analysis on the condition that he abstained from ejaculation for a sufficient number of days and that his acute illness had stabilized after two weeks. At this time, the semen analysis test gave good results. "I was very confused and worried about the initial results, but luckily it wasn't like that," the young man said.
According to Dr. Duy, many people have had their semen tested at the wrong time, resulting in incorrect results. Recently, the doctor also received a 35-year-old patient in Tay Ninh who had his semen tested at two different places and got two different results, with no clear cause.
In fact, many places still apply old reference standards, such as WHO 1999 or 2010, leading to large differences in results. The time of abstinence from ejaculation, current medical conditions and treatment within the last 6 months, mental state at the time of sampling... can all affect the results, requiring careful consultation from medical staff. In addition, the sampling room needs to be "hot" enough, with a sense of safety and comfort so that men can ejaculate optimally.
For accurate results, patients should not use any lubricant gel when ejaculating and should report to medical staff any spilled semen outside the vial. Doctors also recommend choosing a reputable medical facility with an experienced doctor who reads and returns results according to the latest WHO standards, and includes a picture of the sperm. In case the test sample is too abnormal, patients should not worry too much but should discuss with the doctor about factors that may affect the results and can test again after at least two weeks.
About 50% of infertility in couples is related to the husband. The method that helps men recognize good fertility is the result of a semen analysis test. This test aims to evaluate the quantity and quality of sperm by examining semen under a microscope, from which the doctor has appropriate intervention solutions.
