- Supporting disadvantaged students to go to school in Tan Phuoc district and Cai Lay town
- Handing over 3 "Learning Encouragement Homes" to disadvantaged students
On the afternoon of November 26, in Hanoi, IEG Global Education Organization organized the Workshop “Standardization Machine or Bringing Children to Adulthood?” under the guidance of Dr. Nguyen Chi Hieu and the speakers are junior high and high school students who have an inspiring journey in the field of education.
It is not difficult now, in all media, we can easily see primary school students practicing for international certificates, learning formulas, mechanically and participating in many standardized tests at a very early age. Or many students from primary to secondary school always carry with them photocopied books of KET - PET, IELTS exams and thick English exercise sheets with a lifeless appearance. Children are being forced to ripen, molded into a model student according to the standards of family, school and society. Even the pressure of studying, taking exams, and getting scores makes them always have to race against time to meet all the expectations of their parents.
Meanwhile, today's parents, with the desire for their children to be truly successful and excellent according to a certain measure of society, are always worried and burn out the development and learning stages of their children. Parents seem to have forgotten one thing: "Each child is a separate individual, carrying within them unique personalities and potentials". The precious treasure and true potential in each child needs to be placed in the right environment and be aroused, nurtured, and encouraged little by little so that each child has the opportunity to develop to their fullest potential.
Have parents ever wondered: For a child, what does he or she really need most is high scores at school, international awards, gold medals out there? Or as parents and educators or those who are influencing children, how do we need to act so that education truly goes into the essence of children and each child is developed comprehensively, balanced, naturally and deeply? From there, we can give back to children unlimited creativity and sow more seeds of happiness when children find true motivation to learn.
At the workshop "Standardization machine or adult child?", Dr. Nguyen Chi Hieu directly answered the above questions through sharing around three main contents: Nurturing creativity and motivation to learn for children; discovering the potential in each child; orienting a sustainable future for children.
Dr. Nguyen Chi Hieu also shared his own story when he started working in education 15 years ago. At first, he taught and trained students for international certificates, but after a few years, he realized that awards, medals, and achievements did not motivate or make many of his students happy. Because that was the goal of their parents.
Dr. Nguyen Chi Hieu once advised a student to take a one-year “pause” to learn about life around him even though he had been accepted into a top university in the US. This student had studied and achieved all the achievements his parents had set for him, but he only lived around home, school, and exam preparation centers without learning or experiencing reality. He also did not see any motivation or desire to explore and learn in this student.
According to Dr. Nguyen Chi Hieu, every child has good intellectual capacity if adults know how to inspire, nurture and encourage them properly. Students can achieve their learning goals with the support of teachers, if that is what they desire.
While parents often set goals and impose their wishes on their children without listening to them. Therefore, students do not have space or time to do what they like. Gradually, parents and children lose connection and cannot talk to each other.
Dr. Nguyen Chi Hieu advises parents that children today are burdened with too many adult goals. Parents should support their children's goals instead of forcing them to pursue their own desires. Achievements are only a very small slice, not reflecting the whole of a child. 12 years of general education without achievements or awards is okay, as long as students have the ability to self-study, think independently, and know how to take care of themselves, that is already a success.
