On the afternoon of January 4, continuing to question the defendants in the case that occurred at Viet A Company, the Hanoi People's Court's trial panel clarified some more contents related to defendant Phan Quoc Viet (Chairman of the Board of Directors, General Director of Viet A Company).
Late in the afternoon of the same day, answering questions in court, defendant Phan Quoc Viet's wife, Ho Thi Thanh Thuy, said that since the Covid-19 outbreak, Viet A Company had researched the test kit itself. In early 2020, when her husband told her about collaborating with the Military Medical Academy to research and produce the test kit, Thuy knew but did not work directly, all through phone conversations with her husband.
Phan Quoc Viet's wife added that after her husband was arrested, Viet authorized his wife to run Viet A Company. In court, Ms. Thuy affirmed that with her responsibility, she would overcome the situation "to the best of her ability".
After questioning Ms. Thuy, the jury further questioned defendant Phan Quoc Viet about how many bank accounts and savings books were frozen. After a moment of thought, Viet replied that he could not remember.
The jury said that Phan Quoc Viet had 3 bank accounts and 55 savings books with a total amount of more than 320 billion VND frozen. In addition, the authorities also froze 52 savings books of defendant Viet's mother (about more than 140 billion VND) and 2 savings books of this defendant's children (these 2 books are worth 20 billion VND).
In court, Viet explained that part of the money in his mother's savings books was used to pay off his debts. While doing business, Viet borrowed money from his mother to develop the company. Regarding the money in his son's two savings books, Phan Quoc Viet admitted that it was his own money. Viet got this money from many different activities.
After Viet's answer, the jury asked again: On what basis did the jury determine that the amount of more than 140 billion VND belonged to the defendant's mother? Viet replied that during the 15 years of operation of the company, the defendant had to rely on help from his family.
The judge asked: Where did the defendant's mother get so much money to lend to the defendant? Maybe from friends - Viet answered. Then, the judge said that borrowing from friends must have documents to prove it.
To clarify the amount of more than 140 billion VND in 52 savings books of defendant Phan Quoc Viet's mother, the trial panel summoned Ms. Tr. (Viet's mother), but a person present at the trial announced that she would only appear tomorrow morning (January 5) because she received the summons late.
Regarding the assets that were seized and frozen to remedy the consequences of the case, Phan Quoc Viet said that he will remedy them with all the assets in his name.
Regarding the Viet A case, defendants Nguyen Thi Thanh Thuy (former specialist of Vietnam Education Publishing House) and Nguyen Bach Thuy Linh (former Director of SNB Holdings LLC) were prosecuted for "Taking advantage of influence over people with positions and powers for personal gain". When questioned in court, both female defendants could not hold back their tears and admitted their crimes.
