Photo cut from video in which tourist claims Vietnamese coffee he drank is as black as asphalt
In a number of viral videos in the past few days that have been widely quoted from the Small Brained American channel, a foreign man traveling in Vietnam is said to have acted in a negative manner, by leaving subtitles that do not match the content of his videos.
Jessica Anh Dao (Phuong Anh), a Vietnamese girl currently living in the US, quickly responded with a video, pointing out what she considered negative points in Small Brained American's video.
“This American tourist came to Vietnam but insulted Vietnamese people and Vietnamese food,” Phuong Anh analyzed in her English video.
Phuong Anh then cited some of the tourist's videos, including one in which he compared the Vietnamese coffee he bought on a train to being "as black as asphalt" and "tasting like detergent."
Phuong Anh said she believes that not everyone likes all the dishes of other cultures, but one should not use bad words to describe other people's food.
In another video (now no longer on Small Brained American's channel), Small Brained American used incorrect subtitles for a local resident asking where to get gas, Phuong Anh said.
According to the audio in the video, a local resident, speaking Vietnamese and using body language, tells him that there is a gas station 2km away, then waves him away. But the foreign tourist, in the subtitles, calls him “stupid” and “get out of my sight.”
Next is another video where this tourist was stopped by traffic police and asked for his driver's license (this video is also no longer on the channel).
In the video, this tourist is said to have used the wrong subtitles, while the female officer was only translating his words from English to Vietnamese for other colleagues.
According to Phuong Anh, this tourist's actions tarnish not only the image of Vietnamese people but also of Americans.

It's easy for foreign tourists to misunderstand Vietnamese people.
Talking to Tuoi Tre Online , Phuong Anh said that this tourist's actions might make foreigners think that Vietnamese people don't like them.
“Many foreigners commented asking ‘is that true’, ‘is the translation correct’. That’s why I decided to make a response video in English,” Phuong Anh shared.
“There are good people in the world, but there are also rude people. If one person makes a negative video and it goes viral without being punished, others will ‘follow the bad example’ and more people will do the same in the future. So they need to know that such actions are not supported,” she explained.
“Besides, viewers may misunderstand that Vietnamese people may not like foreign tourists, especially American tourists. These types of ‘bad apples spoil the barrel’ make them have a bad reputation.”
Small Brained American's videos quickly faced criticism from netizens, many of whom said that the tourist had mistranslated and distorted what others said, because his videos did not show the content as the subtitles.
Some people advise that if you don't know Vietnamese, you should at least use Google Translate.
Some foreigners also expressed their indignation, commenting that Vietnamese people are very friendly and they had good memories in this country.
