According to Associate Professor, Dr. Pham Manh Hung, Director of the Vietnam Heart Institute, the institute's doctors have just successfully performed an interventional ablation of atrial fibrillation using advanced technology, the Cryo balloon, to isolate the patient's pulmonary veins.
New technique to treat complex arrhythmias performed at Vietnam Heart Institute
Dr. Phan Dinh Phong, Head of the Department of Cardiac Electrophysiology (Vietnam Heart Institute), and his team safely and successfully performed this procedure on October 31. The patient was Mr. NBL (39 years old), who had suffered from paroxysmal atrial fibrillation since 2021. Atrial fibrillation is one of the most common arrhythmias. Frequent episodes of atrial fibrillation cause many symptoms of palpitations and fatigue. The patient almost no longer responded to medication, causing the episodes of atrial fibrillation to become more frequent and prolonged, and symptoms of heart failure began to appear. After being treated with the Cryo balloon technique, the patient's health recovered well.
Associate Professor, Dr. Pham Manh Hung said that the technique of ablating atrial fibrillation using cryotherapy balloon has been performed worldwide since 2013 with a high success rate and safety. The great advantage of the technique is that it is simple, the implementation time is shortened by 50% compared to other conventional atrial fibrillation ablation methods (because it does not need to use electrodes to detect and ablate multiple points around the pulmonary vein inlet in the traditional way). This method is both effective in terms of expertise and increases patient comfort and reduces the workload and risk of prolonged X-ray exposure for doctors.
Previously, since 2009, the Vietnam Heart Institute has routinely implemented the radio frequency ablation technique for atrial fibrillation, the procedure usually takes 3 - 5 hours. With the cryoablation technique, the procedure time is reduced to 1 - 2 hours, ensuring safety and equivalent effectiveness.
With the new technique applied, people with atrial fibrillation do not need to go abroad for treatment at a cost many times higher than in the country. Along with regular implementation in treatment, the Vietnam Heart Institute will train and transfer to other cardiovascular centers across the country.
