The Adventures of Cricket by writer To Hoai is no longer recognizable in 3D film

There are still De Men, De Trui, Tong Coc, Ech Com... but when watching the 3D movie De Men: Adventure to the Swamp, readers will see a completely different version.

Inspired by the work The Adventures of Cricket by writer To Hoai, movie Cricket: Adventure to the Swamp scheduled to be released this summer. This is also the first time De Men is on the big screen.

On the afternoon of January 6, the crew held a press conference to officially announce and reveal the character designs in the film.

Cricket's Adventures in the Modern World

Director and screenwriter Nguyen Mai Phuong shared that when writing the script for the film, the biggest challenge was keeping the original setting or designing a new setting.

According to her, fields, villages, folk games... were so familiar to her generation that Mai Phuong once believed that a real world of insects existed somewhere out there when reading To Hoai's literature.

"But for Gen Z, Gen Alpha... it's not certain. That's why I want to create a new world, a cricket of the 21st century," the director shared, "alongside the main characters in the original work of Writer To Hoai Like De Men and De Trui, the crew created some new characters.

These characters are vividly personified, dressed in human-like costumes and bearing many elements of traditional Vietnamese culture.

For example, the character Nhai Vo, whose image is based on the symbol of the Golden Star, is associated with many generations of Vietnamese people.

Or Water Spider, a character that looks like a quan ho singer, wearing a four-panel dress, and accessories such as a rice drum and palm-leaf fan.

In addition, the crew also took inspiration from influential figures in society to create unique images for the film, including Masew, who acts as the film's music director.

The film is set in a modern world, simulating familiar scenes of Hanoi such as Lenin Park, Hanoi Flag Tower, Long Bien bridge…

Cricket: Adventure to the Swamp tells the story of the adventures of two brothers De Men - De Trui in Lay Loi hamlet, which used to be a green field but is now a garbage collection area, full of lurking dangers.

Last year Wolfoo and the Mysterious Island - a rare Vietnamese animated film - released in theaters and grossed over 4 billion VND (at the time of release). This is a very modest number.

However, as a commercial film released in theaters, the revenue factor cannot be ignored. How did the crew set the revenue target?

Reply Tuoi Tre Online , Mr. Vu Duy Nam - representative of Cineplus, the production unit - said Cricket: Adventure to the Swamp for everyone. Everyone can find something to love in the movie, from the story to the music.

The team set a revenue target of 40 billion VND, or even more, and aspires to bring Cricket: Adventure to the Swamp go abroad

"Animation and 3D films are currently very important and promising fields. To create a quality product requires talent, passion and great effort from young people. You not only revive folk tales but also arouse love for Vietnamese literature, history and culture."
