- People's Artist PHUONG LOAN: I am deeply moved, and my heart is filled with pride. This is a revolutionary stage work that has lived through the years, associated with my childhood and that of many artists who grew up after the South was liberated and the country was completely unified.
My role as Ha was previously performed by the late artist Thanh Thanh Hoa. Now I inherit and feel more deeply about the revolutionary character in the author's work by writer Minh Khoa - Nguyen Gia Nghiem. Director Meritorious Artist Hoa Ha and we have made constant efforts on the rehearsal stage to then reap the results, which is the encouragement of the public. On May 19, Dai Viet New Cai Luong Stage will perform again at Tran Huu Trang Theater. That will be the most meaningful performance of the creative team of the play "Nguoi ven do".
.Author Minh Khoa very simply presents the story of the heroic struggle of the people of 18 betel gardens in the resistance war against foreign invaders. The literary quality is profound in every line and song. As an artist who has performed in many revolutionary plays, what are your concerns when the cai luong stage is increasingly lacking in works with strong literary qualities?
- It is true that through the writing style of writer Minh Khoa, the life of the people in the play "The People on the Edge of the City" is as beautiful as a painting, with fragrant betel leaves, the emotions of couples in love, the sound of the monochord, the soulful voice of Luc Van Tien's poetry... The peace of life without gunfire is always the dream of the people of Ba Diem. But when needed, the people of the 18 betel gardens are also ready to throw themselves into the war, accepting sacrifices to protect the revolutionary ideal.

"The People on the Suburban Side" is a story full of humanity, love for the homeland and country during the resistance war against the US and ended with the victory of our army and people in the general offensive and uprising in the spring of 1975. The story revolves around the couple Mr. Bay Don and Mr. Tam Khoe who endured many pains in their lives to protect Mr. Sau Ho - a character who had a great influence on the heroic struggle of our army and people. The character image in the play also exudes the literary language and literary quality in the art of reformed opera that has made the play "The People on the Suburban Side" very long-lasting.
After overcoming "death" many times, what have you learned about life?
- In May 2022, I had a traffic accident while on tour in Ca Mau City. My family took me to the local hospital, then transferred me to Cho Ray Hospital for emergency treatment. At that time, I was diagnosed with a traumatic brain injury, a broken jaw, a broken cheekbone... Fortunately, I was actively treated by the doctors so I overcame the critical stage and within just 3 months of treatment, I was able to return to the stage, accepting to be a judge for the "Golden Rice" and "Golden Bell of Traditional Music" competitions. I have a simple conclusion: "Try to overcome all difficulties, even if it is a life-threatening illness, you must be strong enough to overcome it."
It is known that you and two People's Artists Thanh Dien and Trinh Kim Chi will carry out art programs to raise funds to support the repair of the pagoda and cemetery for artists in Ho Chi Minh City?
- That was the initiative of People's Artist Thanh Dien, we hope there will be many ways to cover the costs of repairing each item in the temple grounds and the artist cemetery. Recently, I toured the US, supported by artist Linh Vu and singer Duy Ninh, who organized performances for me to call for support from overseas audiences.
After that, we brought back the $5,000 donated by overseas Vietnamese to contribute to the repair. In August 2024, I may continue my tour in the US, which also has this noble meaning. The overseas Vietnamese audience in the US is very supportive of us, and we want to contribute to beautify the temple grounds and the HCM City artists' cemetery.
Always a positive inspiration to junior artists in the profession, what do you say about this quiet job?
- Luckily, I have experience in many different types of roles, from flirtatious, poisonous, comedic to tragic. When I was young, I specialized in cross-dressing and female general roles. So when the kids need help and analysis, I am ready. Also through the times I participated as a coach for the contestants in the "Golden Bell of Traditional Opera" competition, I am happy to see the young actors improve.
If you talk about the biggest concern of an artist before the appearance of the Ho Chi Minh City reformed opera stage, what would you say?
- All stages need succession, and this force is getting thinner and thinner. Without immediate preparation, the standards of the reformed theater will be at risk of disappearing. From the stages of composition, staging, art design, sound, lighting, costumes, props... only revolve around the old capital. While the entertainment technology in the world has advanced far, the traditional theater is still sluggish with manual techniques, not applying many advanced technologies to serve the performance of the reformed theater. I think it is necessary to create conditions to train the next generation. The reformed art field currently has many shortcomings, we must soon find and cultivate young nuclei capable of mastering the reformed theater house.
.You were awarded the Mai Vang Award by readers in 2006 for your role as teacher Dung in the play "Tears of Deep Love". What is your most memorable memory of this event?
- I cried for the character because it was the feelings of a teacher facing the hardships of students in life at that time. This role made me cry in happiness because I received the Mai Vang Award, a prestigious award voted by readers and the public, the longest-standing award today. After 30 years of formation and development of the Mai Vang Award, it can be said that this is a great achievement of cultural and artistic activities in Ho Chi Minh City. I long to play this role again on stage in the near future.
"I do not dare to accept disciples or students, I only know that with my experience, I will pass it all on to the young generation of artists.
