Controversial because of incorrect medical knowledge
Returning as MC of Who is that person season 5, Tran Thanh was caught making incorrect statements about medical expertise right in the first episode.
Specifically, when chatting with a player from Thailand - NPAK, a transgender person from female to male, Tran Thanh noticed and asked about the large scar on his left wrist, whether it was a consequence of surgery.
Although NPAK did not reveal details about this surgery, Tran Thanh quickly explained that "people have to open blood vessels and put hormones and everything in to change gender".
Tran Thanh caused controversy when he made an inaccurate statement about the transgender man NPAK.
Tran Thanh's statement was immediately criticized by doctors and medical professionals as having serious knowledge errors. According to professional explanations, injecting male hormones, specifically testosterone, into the blood vessels is contraindicated in medicine.
Immediately after that, the program Who is that person spoke up to admit the mistake in providing information about NPAK's gender transition process. The program also promptly reviewed the content, cutting out the part of Tran Thanh sharing incorrect knowledge on the program's rebroadcast platforms.
Although the show's side has apologized, Tran Thanh has remained silent. Many viewers still expressed dissatisfaction with this move of the male MC.
Misjudged musical knowledge
In episode 13 of Mask Singer, Tran Thanh commented on Ti Nau's (Thuy Chi) singing voice with the song Ave Maria. He commented that Ti Nau sang the hymn in a pop style, mixed voice and thought that if he sang in a classical style, his voice would be heavier and have more vibrato.
“This semi-classical style is not Ti Nau’s forte. He sings this song in a pop style, with a mixed voice. If he sang it in a classical style, it would be heavier and more resonant. But he is so good, his voice is very beautiful,” the male MC commented.
Musician ViruSs once commented that Tran Thanh had wrong musical knowledge.
After the show aired, musician ViruSs said Tran Thanh was misunderstanding the opera genre and how to perform hymns.
“I feel that Mr. Thanh is misunderstanding opera and hymns. This is understandable. The way to perform hymns is not as Mr. Thanh described, that is, to be clear, strong, and resounding. Hymns are songs performed in places like churches. Therefore, this is not a song for singers to show off and sing strongly.
My perspective on songs like Ave Maria is that clarity, lightness, and soaring are more important than skill. I'm not defending Ti Nau, I'm just saying this so people don't misunderstand his musical knowledge," the male musician commented.
False statements about the Underground community
In episode 6 of Rap Viet season 1, talking about the initial success of the show, Tran Thanh said: "We have erased the boundary between underground and mainstream music. There is nothing called unorthodox if it is highly artistic, done carefully, professionally and with investment.
Sometimes there are people who put their own opinions into the rap so that it speaks for others. That's what makes us very happy when Rap Viet has gradually affirmed its position in the hearts of Vietnamese music lovers."
Tran Thanh's statement at Rap Viet is considered to be incorrect.
The male MC's sharing has caused many different controversial opinions in the online community. Accordingly, many opinions agree with Tran Thanh's point of view that Rap Viet has blurred the line between Underground and mainstream music. However, the majority of comments refute Tran Thanh's opinion.
Most young people in the Rap community or even "outsiders" think: "Underground is still Underground" or "Music has no boundaries". Some people even assert that Tran Thanh's words are completely wrong, saying so will make music lose its quality.
Controversy over statements related to gender equality
Also at Rap Viet, Tran Thanh commented on the performance of Suboi and Tlinh. Right after the performance, the MC excitedly shared: "If women are confident and cool like that, why do they have to fight for feminism?"
However, Tran Thanh's sharing caused controversy. Accordingly, the majority of the audience thought that Tran Thanh was underestimating women and misunderstanding the feminist movement.
Suboi commented that Tran Thanh is a person with old thinking.
Right then, Suboi - Rap Viet coach herself livestreamed on her personal page and confided in her fans. She shared that during the working process, Suboi found Tran Thanh to be an old-fashioned thinker and the male MC's statement was unreasonable.
"I think what Tran Thanh said is unreasonable. I just want to let everyone know that strong women do not mean they want to compete with men.
The feminist thing here is not to hate men or anything. But on the contrary, from then on, the people who hate Su or criticize Su are all men. Or rather, boys because now I have found a great man. I am very grateful for that," the female rapper shared.
