Born and raised in Trieu Phong district, after finishing junior high school, Ms. Thanh did not continue her education but switched to vocational training, then worked as a worker in Da Nang city. In 2016, Ms. Thanh married Mr. Tran Thanh Minh, in Dau Binh village, Cam Tuyen commune, Cam Lo district. After getting married, the couple worked in a textile enterprise in Da Nang city for 2 more years. With the desire to reunite their family, in 2018, both decided to return to their husband's hometown to start a business.

Returning to her hometown, Ms. Thanh and her husband tried many different jobs to make a living such as running a food service business, working as a factory worker... but life still encountered many difficulties. Realizing that the local conditions could develop rabbit farming, she traveled to many places to learn and decided to invest in a rabbit farm, the New Zealand breed.

“My husband and I studied the technical process, product output, and experience of raising rabbits at many farms before daring to start this farm. At first, due to limited capital and lack of experience, I only raised a small number of rabbits, mainly investing in modern, closed-loop barns for long-term raising, then gradually increasing the herd each year,” Ms. Thanh shared.

To start a business with a rabbit farming model, Ms. Thanh invested 300 million VND to build a barn, purchase materials, cooling equipment, water pumps to clean the barn, buy breeding rabbits... Initially, she only raised 30 breeding mother rabbits, but thanks to investing in proper care and applying science and technology to the farming process, the rabbit herd increased rapidly.

At this point, her family's rabbit herd has grown to 500, of which 50 are breeding rabbits, the rest are meat rabbits and baby rabbits. To ensure food for the rabbits, she grows 1.5 sao of lemongrass, and also uses potato leaves, bananas, bran, and corn flour to mix into daily food.

Ms. Thanh said that the rabbit farming model has the advantage of fast reproduction, few diseases, the main food is vegetables and grass available in the home garden; it is important that the food is dry, the barn is cleaned daily, and is airy... Baby rabbits start to reproduce at the 7th month, giving birth to 8-12 babies/litter, each litter is 2 months apart. If rabbits are raised for meat at the 4th month, they can be sold at a weight of about 2.5 kg/rabbit.

Currently, Ms. Thanh's farm specializes in supplying meat rabbits and breeding rabbits; meat rabbits cost 100,000 VND/kg, breeding rabbits 140,000 VND/kg. Because the rabbits are fed mainly grass mixed with corn flour and bran, customers rate the meat quality as much more fragrant and chewy than rabbits raised on industrial feed. The output market is quite stable, mostly supplying restaurants, hotels, and eateries in Quang Tri province. The model brings her family more than 120 million VND/year.

“My husband will soon go abroad to work, but I am determined to expand the model to about 100 breeding mother rabbits, while increasing promotion and building the brand to find a wider consumer market. Thereby contributing to increasing family income and creating more jobs for local workers,” said Ms. Thanh.

According to the President of the Women's Union of Cam Tuyen Commune, Nguyen Thi Thuy Thuong, Ms. Thanh is a young member who has just joined the association but is very active and enthusiastic; she is willing to learn about suitable production models to develop her family's economy. In the future, the association will act as a credit guarantee to create conditions for her to borrow preferential loans to invest in expanding the farm. At the same time, this is considered one of the typical models to propagate, guide members in the area to learn and replicate.
