Attending the groundbreaking ceremony at Dinh Lung school - Ta Phin Primary and Secondary School, Mr. Nguyen Van Chinh, Vice Chairman of Dong Van district, said that Ta Phin commune is a commune in region 3, 13 km from the district center. The facilities at Dinh Lung school are facing many difficulties, especially the lack of toilets, so it is in dire need of new construction. "The 'School Hygiene' project is a gift from a philanthropist showing his concern and support for the locality in education. This work helps students have good conditions for studying and living, thereby improving the quality of education," said Mr. Chinh.

According to Mr. Le Quang Hien - Deputy Head of the Department of Education and Training of Dong Van district, in recent years, the scale of schools and the quality of schools have been improved, the rate of maintaining student enrollment in Dong Van is quite stable. However, the facilities, including the quality of toilets, are still low. Some schools lack toilets for boarding students and teachers. Some schools and auxiliary works are dilapidated, lack water, and do not ensure hygiene. This has a significant impact on the quality of life and study of teachers and students.

"We will accompany the project during the construction process, commit to guiding beneficiary schools and protecting the works well after they are put into operation," said Mr. Hien.

Sharing with the Hope Fund about the lack of toilets at Sinh Lung Primary and Secondary Boarding School for Ethnic Minorities, Mr. Nguyen Van Lam, the school's principal, said that the school has more than 400 boarding students and more than 20 teachers, but there is only one toilet and no private room. During the school year, students have to wait in line to use the toilet. Teachers let students use their personal hygiene, so it is often late at night before their turn. "Overloaded capacity and lack of water make the toilets smelly, not ensuring the quality of learning and working of staff," said Mr. Lam.

Ms. Mai Thi Thanh Huong, Head of External Relations of the Healthcare Industry - Sanofi Vietnam Company, shared that although toilets are ancillary works, they contribute greatly to the operation of a school. In 2022, Sanofi Vietnam and the Hope Fund built 20 school toilets in Van Ho district, Son La.

"When the project was put into operation after 3 months of construction, seeing with our own eyes the students using clean toilets, washing their hands under clean tap water, we felt very happy because we contributed to helping them relieve their fear of dirty toilets. That is also the motivation for us to continue accompanying the Hope Fund, bringing "School Hygiene" to Dong Van, Ha Giang", Ms. Huong said.

In parallel with the groundbreaking ceremony, the parties also conducted surveys at schools in Lung Phin, Sung Trai, Ta Phin... in Dong Van district. Most of the district's schools do not have toilets or have them but they do not meet the criteria of safety and cleanliness.

The "School Hygiene" project, part of the School Light program, aims to eliminate dirty, unsafe toilets for children. The project has been implemented since June 2022, with the support of many units, including Sanofi Vietnam for 2 consecutive years. After 6 months of implementation, the project has built 49 new toilets in Van Ho district, Son La province and Muong Nhe district, Dien Bien province. 7,000 students and teachers at these schools have been able to use clean, safe facilities.
