Monkey bites people in Ho Chi Minh City.

A nearly 10 kg monkey that escaped from its enclosure and injured a girl has been captured by Ho Chi Minh City forest rangers and taken to an animal rescue station for care.

On the afternoon of January 31st, the Ho Chi Minh City Forest Protection Department used bait and placed a trap on a tree branch to capture the female long-tailed monkey that had attacked people in An Phu Dong ward, District 12. The rare monkey was taken to the Cu Chi Wildlife Rescue Station for care before being released back into the forest.

Two days ago, a 20-year-old female employee at a coffee shop on Vuon Lai Street was bitten on the leg and arm by a monkey that had escaped from a nearby house. She had to get vaccinated. The monkey then continued to roam the residential area, causing trouble and stealing belongings, which worried many people.

In late 2023, authorities also tranquilized and captured four monkeys that had been causing trouble and attacking people within a week. According to a representative of the Ho Chi Minh City Forest Protection Department, people often keep monkeys as pets to guard their homes. When these monkeys escape from their cages, they often bite people and can transmit infectious diseases such as musculoskeletal disorders and hepatitis A and B.

Furthermore, the aforementioned monkey species are in Group 2 of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), and therefore require permission from the competent authority to keep them in captivity.
