Phu Quoc is primarily responsible for surveying, compensating and clearing the land to speed up the progress of preparing to expand Phu Quoc International Airport (Phu Quoc Airport).

"The locality coordinated with relevant units to survey, set coordinates, and conduct geological drilling to prepare for the expansion of items at Phu Quoc airport such as building a second runway, extending the first runway, adding terminals, parking lots, aprons, and VIP lounges at the airport to meet the standards to welcome important guests and heads of state attending APEC 2027," said Mr. Khoa.

Previously, the Department of Construction of Kien Giang province informed that Phu Quoc international airport has reached level 4E, with a runway capable of receiving large aircraft such as A350, B787 and a capacity of 4 million passengers/year, 5,000 tons of cargo/year.

Terminal 2 has separate departure and arrival levels. The airport has 9 aircraft stands (1 large aircraft stand B777 or equivalent, 4 A321/320 aircraft stands, 4 ATR72 small aircraft stands).

In 2024, Phu Quoc is expected to welcome nearly 6 million domestic and foreign visitors. As a result, Phu Quoc International Airport is overloaded and the locality has proposed expanding this airport to both welcome APEC 2027 guests and serve tourism development.

Studying experiences to successfully organize APEC 2027

The leader of Phu Quoc City People's Committee said that the locality is also urgently carrying out other preparations to build a multi-functional conference center and press center with a capacity of over 14,000 people.

Kien Giang directed departments, branches and localities to coordinate and propose to higher authorities to quickly approve and allocate capital, start the process of designing, selecting contractors, and constructing other projects.

In particular, the leaders of Kien Giang and Phu Quoc City People's Committee organized a delegation to learn from Da Nang (the locality that successfully organized APEC 2017). Through this, the locality learned a lot of experience in management and investment in building projects to successfully serve the important event of APEC 2027.

"Phu Quoc is in the process of proposing a specific list, total investment capital, and allocation of capital sources invested by private or state investors to quickly build projects, works and facilities to serve the event," Mr. Tran Minh Khoa added.

According to Phu Quoc City People's Committee, on April 15, 2025, the Ministry of Construction issued a decision approving the planning of Phu Quoc International Airport for the period 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050, with a land use area of ​​about 1,050 hectares. Of which, 198.4 hectares of local land will be added to expand this airport.

Phase 2021-2030, airport level 4E (according to the standard code of the International Civil Aviation Organization - ICAO), capacity of about 10 million passengers/year and 25,000 tons of cargo/year.

The aircraft types to be operated are B747, B787, A350 and equivalent. The landing system will be planned to extend the existing runway to both sides to a size of 3,500m x 45m; runway number 2 will be 3,300m x 45m.

T2 passenger terminal parking lot and expansion of existing parking lot to accommodate about 30 aircraft parking positions; planning of aircraft parking lot in VIP/general aviation area to ensure synchronous operation.
