Durian purchasing warehouses have simultaneously raised prices but goods are still scarce; with record prices of up to 195,000 VND/kg for Thai durian in Tien Giang market and 160,000 VND/kg for Ri6...
Update on durian prices today (November 11): Durian prices skyrocket, supply is scarce
In the domestic market, durian prices continued to increase today, November 11, after a sharp increase of 55,000 - 60,000 VND/kg in the previous session in all major growing areas.
Currently, the price of beautiful Thai durian is commonly up to 170,000 - 175,000 VND/kg depending on the region. The price of off-season durian is high for very beautiful export products and in some places it is up to over 190,000 VND/kg when entering the off-season harvest season in the Mekong Delta provinces.
On November 11, durian purchasing companies and warehouses in Tien Giang announced the purchase price of Thai durian type A (2.7 boxes, weight from 1.9 - 5kg) from 190,000 - 195,000 VND/kg. Type B has a lower price, from 170,000 - 175,000 VND/kg.
Ri 6 durian grade A also has a price of 145,000 - 160,000 VND/kg, while grade B ranges from 115,000 - 130,000 VND/kg. This is a record high price, reflecting the great demand from the market. Ri6 durian also reached the highest price of up to 70,000 VND/kg.
According to the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Tien Giang province, although the durian acreage has increased (reaching about 21,790 hectares by the end of 2023), the actual output tends to decrease due to the impact of the weather. Long-standing durian gardens, which are the main source of supply, cannot maintain the same productivity as before, pushing up durian prices and creating fierce competition among traders.
Both farmers and durian buyers hope to overcome this difficult situation in the coming years. However, with the current unfavorable weather conditions, maintaining a stable supply will be a major challenge for the durian industry in the West.
Not only Tien Giang, the durian shortage is also happening in neighboring provinces such as Ben Tre. According to records, in Chau Thanh district (Ben Tre province), the durian purchase price has also increased. Traders in Ben Tre also said that finding a supply from durian gardens is becoming difficult, as the number of durians meeting export standards is decreasing.
In September alone, durian exports accounted for 65% of the country's fruit and vegetable export turnover. In the first 9 months of the year, durian exports reached 2.7 billion USD, an unprecedented export record for a Vietnamese fruit.
However, according to the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association, our durian is facing great competition in the main market, China. Therefore, this is also the time to promote the formation of sustainable durian models.
As one of the localities with the largest durian growing area in Vietnam, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Dak Lak province said: The key areas will have to form production links between farmer organizations, which are cooperatives with enterprises, and must strictly apply good agricultural production processes to ensure quality, have markets, and export to increase value.
It can be seen that, with the durian industry, farmers will be the core of the connections, and businesses will be the leaders. Because they are the ones who provide new farming techniques, supply materials and there will even be businesses that consume sustainable output for farmers.
According to data from the General Administration of Customs of China, the country imported more than 1.4 million tons of durian in 2023, with the value increasing 70% year-on-year to $6.7 billion. But experts note that China's annual per capita durian consumption is only about 1kg, compared to 13kg in Malaysia and 4kg to 5kg in Thailand.
In addition, durian is still considered an expensive “super fruit” in wealthy Chinese cities like Shanghai. A 3kg to 4kg durian imported from Thailand still costs 100 to 150 yuan in supermarkets in Shanghai. Consumption is down everywhere, and durian is no longer a necessity.
