At 11pm on February 22, at Beta Cinemas (Tran Quang Khai, District 1) - one of the first locations in Ho Chi Minh City to have additional screenings of the movie Dao, Pho and Piano, tickets were sold out.
Some viewers who could not buy tickets online went directly to the theater to buy tickets for Dao, Pho and Piano for the extra midnight screenings such as 11:35 p.m. or 11:59 p.m. However, they all had to leave in disappointment.
According to the ticket counter staff, all tickets for the 11:35 p.m. screening were sold out. The staff also added that the screenings on the following days, February 23, 24, and 25, were sold out. Audiences who want to watch the movie can wait for the next schedule to be updated next week.
Mr. Ngoc Le (office worker, District 10) expressed his disappointment when he could not buy tickets to see the movie Dao, Pho and Piano even though he had been to 2 or 3 cinema complexes in Ho Chi Minh City.
Sharing with reporters, he said that as soon as he heard that the movie was being released in Ho Chi Minh City, he immediately went to the Beta and Cinestar ticket purchase apps, but the system kept reporting errors and received a notification that he had to buy at the theater.
Because it was during office hours, he could only go to the cinemas to buy tickets after 6pm, but the early screenings were all sold out, and the staff informed him to update the information about additional screenings. As soon as there was an announcement that there would be additional screenings at 11:35pm and 11:59pm, he went to the cinema around 11pm to buy tickets but was still unsuccessful.
Young audience member Huyen Thu (2nd year student, University of Medicine and Pharmacy) said that she arrived at the theater at 9pm to buy tickets but was only able to buy the last 2 seats in row B and had to wait until 11:35pm to watch the movie.
“I went to see the movie after reading reviews online. I was quite curious and especially love history so I took the time to see the movie,” this audience member added.
In Ho Chi Minh City, in addition to Beta Cinema, Cinestar Cinema also sells tickets for the movie Dao, Pho and Piano. However, on the evening of February 22, there is only one screening at 11:40 p.m. at Cinestar Quoc Thanh (Nguyen Trai, District 5).
At Quoc Thanh theater, tickets were also sold out so there was an additional screening at 11:59 p.m.
During the past few days, the movie Dao, Pho and Piano suddenly became a hit in the online community, however, only a few viewers were able to watch the movie because when it was released, it was only shown at the National Cinema Center.
After the National Cinema Center's website crashed, the unit that chose to sell tickets directly still had a large audience. The center continuously increased screenings and extended the screening time.
On February 20, two private units, Beta Media and Cinestar, agreed to release the film Dao, Pho and Piano and return all revenue to the State.
And on the first day of ticket sales, these two units were enthusiastically received by audiences in Ho Chi Minh City.
Peach, Pho and Piano is an unprecedented box office phenomenon in Vietnamese cinema. The film, commissioned by the State, has received widespread public attention and created a media effect. As of the morning of February 22, the film Peach, Pho and Piano has surpassed the 1 billion VND revenue mark (according to Box Office Vietnam).
The film will be shown at the National Cinema Center from February 10, 2024 (the first day of the Lunar New Year 2024) with 3 screenings/day. Due to the sudden increase in the number of moviegoers, by February 20, there will be 18 screenings/day, but this is still not enough to meet the audience's demand.
Faced with this phenomenon, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism assigned the Cinema Department to work with distribution units and encourage cinema establishments to disseminate films produced in Vietnam, including films using the state budget.
