On the website of Le Quy Don High School, in the section "Traditional History", the school clearly states: Le Quy Don High School was started in 1874 and completed in 1877, teaching from primary to baccalaureate according to the French program. When it was first established, the school was named Collège Indigène (native high school), not long after it was renamed Collège Chasseloup Laubat, after the then Minister of Overseas France (also known as the Ministry of Colonies), Francois Marquis de Chasseloup Laubat (1754-1833).
The expansion of Vietnamese students (who must have French nationality) was carried out in the early 20th century. The school was divided into two separate areas: the area for French students, called Quartier Européen, and the area for Vietnamese students, called the native area, but both places studied the same French program and took the French baccalaureate exam.
In 1954, the school changed its name again to Jean Jacques Rousseau (the name of a French intellectual in the 18th century "Enlightenment" movement) but was still managed by the French, mainly teaching Vietnamese students.
In 1970, the school was returned to the Vietnamese and renamed Le Quy Don Education Center, with classes from grade 1 to grade 12.
After the country was unified, on August 29, 1977, the City People's Committee signed a decision to establish Le Quy Don High School.
Le Quy Don High School is currently part of the public system of the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City.
The Saigon - Ho Chi Minh City Dictionary edited by two authors Thach Phuong and Le Trung Hoa also affirmed: In 1874, College Chasseloup Laubat was established. Thus, it can be affirmed that Le Quy Don is the oldest high school in Ho Chi Minh City today with 150 years old and was chosen as one of the cultural relics of Ho Chi Minh City.
Le Quy Don High School is a school implementing the high-quality program "Advanced school, international integration". This 2024-2025 school year, Le Quy Don High School will celebrate its 150th anniversary.
