Max McFarlin (from Arkansas, USA) is a famous blogger in the world travel community and owns a Youtube channel with nearly 600,000 followers.

On his personal channel, Max regularly shares videos about street food in many countries he has visited, including Vietnam.

In Vietnam, Max mainly lives and works in Ho Chi Minh City. Therefore, during his recent trip to Hanoi, the young man took the opportunity to taste all the delicious dishes of the capital or dishes with strong Northern flavors such as bun cha, bun ngan, banh cuon, etc.

Not only enjoying specialties or expensive dishes, Max also invited his familiar companion Chris to experience a cheap restaurant specializing in serving students to see what's special.

After a while of searching, Max and Chris finally arrived at the 33-year-old “com dust” restaurant, located on Ta Quang Buu Street, in the Bach Khoa residential area. This is also a familiar dining address for office workers in the surrounding area and students from the University of Construction and the University of Technology.

As soon as they stopped the car, the two American guys were delighted and impressed when the owner greeted them warmly and enthusiastically. Although it is called “com thuc” (street food), the restaurant actually specializes in serving buffet dishes, prepared according to Northern flavors with a menu of about 20-30 different dishes.

Max revealed that he really likes the Southern beef rolls wrapped in betel leaves, so as soon as he saw the diverse and eye-catching food counter, he immediately chose the betel leaf rolls. In addition, at the suggestion of the restaurant owner, this Western guest ordered “a big plate of rice”, plus a few typical dishes such as fried tofu, egg rolls with meat, pickles, stir-fried bamboo shoots, crispy fried chicken thighs, etc.

In addition to two full meals of 7-8 dishes, the two young men also ordered a separate plate of grilled pork with betel leaves, braised eggs with ham, and stir-fried pork liver with onions. When eating, each person was also served a bowl of sour soup and a bowl of spicy fish sauce.

Max revealed that he only ate a little bread and a cup of coffee in the morning to “save room” for a full lunch. Therefore, when the street food was served, he could not hide his excitement and immediately enjoyed it.

The first dish this blogger tried was fried eggs with meat. He admitted that he really likes fried foods, especially when dipped in salty fish sauce and chili.

“The eggs are fried over high heat so the outer shell is quite crispy, and dipped in salty fish sauce makes them even more delicious. I am addicted to this type of food,” Max said.

Next, the American guy tasted the spring rolls with betel leaves and commented that the taste was quite unique. He compared the Southern spring rolls with the Northern spring rolls and said that although the preparation methods in each region are different, the flavors of each dish are equally appealing.

The handsome Western guest revealed that he loves grilled pork rolls with betel leaves so much that he "can eat 30 pieces at once without getting bored".

In addition to omelettes and grilled pork rolls wrapped in lolot leaves, Max also constantly exclaims and praises dishes such as pickles, steamed pork with shrimp paste, etc. as delicious. These dishes, although simple, are very "rice-eating" and are often loved and prepared by many Vietnamese families.

Max was initially wary of the sour soup because it did not have as many vegetables as other soups he had tried. However, when he tried it, he was completely surprised by the attractive sour taste of this soup.

"The dishes are seasoned a little saltier to go well with rice. In addition, eating and drinking iced tea will be very harmonious," Max commented.

At the end of the meal, Max and Chris paid for two full meals with additional dishes for 200,000 VND. The couple thought the price was quite reasonable, the food was tasty, and enough to make their stomachs "full".
