International visitors to Vietnam increased by nearly 60%, Indian and Cambodian visitors skyrocketed

According to the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism, international visitors to Vietnam in June 2024 reached more than 1.2 million.

Low season for international tourism

In the first 6 months of 2024, the total number of international visitors reached more than 8.8 million, an increase of 58.4% over the same period last year and an increase of 4.1% over the same period in 2019.

International arrivals by air still dominate with more than 7.4 million arrivals, followed by road with more than 1.26 million arrivals. Arrivals by sea are insignificant.

According to the assessment of the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism, the whole country is currently entering the peak season for domestic tourism and the low season for international tourism.

However, the number of international visitors in June was still 5.3% higher than the same period in 2019 (before the pandemic), which is a positive signal for the international tourism market.

With 8.8 million arrivals, Vietnam tourism achieved 50% of the annual target of 17-18 million arrivals.

In terms of market size, Korea continues to be the market with the largest number of visitors to Vietnam in the first half of 2024 with 2.2 million arrivals (accounting for 25.8%).

China ranked second, reaching 1.8 million arrivals (accounting for 21.4%). These two markets alone contributed 47.2% of the total number of international arrivals in the past 6 months.

Next is Taiwan (630 thousand visits), the US (415 thousand visits), Japan (336 thousand visits), Malaysia (254 thousand visits).

In the top 10 largest markets of Vietnamese tourism, there are also Australia and India, reaching 239 thousand and 231 thousand visitors respectively.

These two markets have risen to 7th and 8th place, above Cambodia and Thailand in 9th and 10th place.

Customers may increase further.

Regarding the level of recovery compared to 2019 , considering the market from regions, in the first 6 months of this year, the number of international visitors from most regions exceeded the same period in 2019.

Of which, the number of visitors from Australia reached 119% compared to the same period in 2019, Asia reached 106%, America reached 103%, Europe also recovered to 92%.

According to businesses, the peak of international tourism starts from October to April of the following year.

Therefore, the number of international visitors that Vietnam can welcome may increase even higher in the following months.

Along with that, Vietnam is also carrying out many campaigns to promote and advertise tourism internationally, enhancing the position of the destination.

Data from the Vietnamese tourism industry also shows that in June 2024, the country had 14 million departures, of which about 9.3 million stayed.

In the first 6 months of the year, the number of domestic visitors reached 66.5 million. Currently, the domestic tourism market is entering the peak summer tourism season.

The number of domestic tourists is increasing rapidly every month. It is estimated that the total revenue of the tourism industry in the first 6 months of the year reached 436.5 trillion VND.
