Latest EURO 2024 results on June 18: Shocks continue to appear

Romania and Slovakia have consecutively created shocks by defeating higher-rated opponents on the opening day of EURO 2024, while France had to struggle to win.

Teams considered "underdogs" have continuously created shocks in the matches on the night of June 17 and early morning of June 18 in the group stage of EURO 2024.

Slovakia was the team that created the biggest shock since the beginning of the tournament when they won 1-0 against Belgium in the opening day of Group E.

Ivan Schranz played the hero when he scored the only goal in the 7th minute to bring complete and unexpected joy to Slovakia.

This victory gives Coach Francesco Calzona's team a huge advantage in the competition for a ticket to the knockout round.

On the other side of the battle line, the Belgian team is making many people feel worried after what they showed on the opening day.

Belgium played in a deadlock and their stars did not show much against their opponents, especially the attack with the presence of Romelu Lukaku proved quite unlucky.

Striker Romelu Lukaku had a disappointing performance in the first half when he failed to score after some good chances in the first half. In the second half, he was quite unlucky when he put the ball into Slovakia's net twice but both times were denied by VAR.

This made Lukaku go down in history with an unwanted mark when he became the first player to have his goal twice denied by VAR technology at EURO 2024.

The defeat on the opening day forced the Belgian team to change when entering the match with Romania in the second match if they do not want to be eliminated from the group stage, which happened to them at the 2022 World Cup.

However, the task of defeating Kevin De Bruyne's Romanian team is certainly not easy when the opponent is in great excitement.

Previously, Romania also created a shock with a 3-0 victory over Ukraine with goals from Nicolae Stanciu, Răzvan Marin and Denis Drăguş.

This surprising result helped the Romanian team get their first victory at EURO after 24 years.

Romania have the same 3 points as Slovakia but are temporarily at the top of Group E thanks to a better goal difference.

If they both win or at least draw in the second match, both Romania and Slovakia will have a good chance of advancing to the group stage.

Meanwhile, in Group D, the French team, a strong candidate for the championship, had to struggle to win 1-0 against the Austrian team.

Even the only goal France scored in the match was a matter of luck, as Kylian Mbappé's cross accidentally turned into a dangerous situation, causing Maximilian Wöber to shake his head and send the ball into his own net.

The hard-fought victory on the opening day helped coach Didier Deschamps and his team get three points like the Netherlands after the opening match of Group D.

In the opening match of Group D, the Netherlands team also had to struggle to come back to win 2-1 against Poland.

In that match, Poland had the better start with the opening goal in the 16th minute after a high header from Adam Buksa. However, 13 minutes later, Gakpo's shot from outside the box hit a Polish defender and changed direction to score the equalizer 1-1 for the Netherlands.

In the second half, the Netherlands increased the pressure but had to wait until Wout Weghorst entered the field and finished coldly in the 83rd minute for the "Orange Storm" to have a dramatic 2-1 comeback victory.

In the next match, France will face the Netherlands in a highly anticipated "big battle". With the current situation, the team that wins this match will get a ticket to the knockout round of EURO 2024.
