This is the second time in UEFA Nations League history that Germany and Italy have faced each other, after being in the same group in the 2022-2023 season (Italy drew 1-1 at home, lost 2-5 away).
In the group stage, the Italian team lost only 1 match, losing to France and finishing second in Group 2 of League A. Meanwhile, Germany was undefeated and won first place in Group 3.
In addition to the Germany-Italy match, the match between defending champions Spain and the Netherlands is also difficult to predict. The Spanish team is still showing impressive form after winning the EURO 2024 championship. They are the team with the best record in the UEFA Nations League group stage with 5 wins and 1 draw. In addition, the Spanish team also has a record of 16 recent unbeaten matches. The Dutch team is somewhat underestimated, but will certainly always know how to create difficulties for Spain on the journey to defend the throne.
Notably, three of the four quarter-final matches of the UEFA Nations League this season were opponents in previous World Cup finals. Italy beat Germany in the 1982 World Cup final; Spain beat the Netherlands in the 2010 World Cup; France defeated Croatia in the 2018 World Cup. In last season's UEFA Nations League, Croatia played impressively to reach the final but unfortunately missed out on the title after losing on penalties. In 10 matches, Croatia has only won one match against France, and that was also the most recent match between the two teams in the group stage of the UEFA Nations League 2022-2023.
The remaining quarter-final match is between Portugal and Denmark. This is considered the "easiest" ticket for Portugal, because Denmark is not in good form in this year's tournament. This is the first time Portugal and Denmark have met in the knockout round of an official tournament. The Nordic representative is also at a disadvantage in head-to-head matches in all competitions, having won only 3, drawn 2 and lost 11 out of 16 matches against Portugal. If they win a ticket to the semi-finals, Cristiano Ronaldo and his teammates will face the winner of the Germany - Italy match.
The quarter-finals of the 2024–25 UEFA Nations League will be played over two legs, home and away. The first leg of the quarter-finals will be played on 20 March 2025 and the second leg on 23 March 2025. The teams finishing second in their qualifying group will play the first leg at home. From the semi-finals onwards, the matches will be played over one leg, on neutral ground, on 4 June and 5 June 2025. The final will be played on 8 June 2025.
