Germany: Harry Kane's double in the Champions League on the evening of March 5 helped him surpass Didier Drogba in terms of scoring records in European Cups.
In the 38th minute of the Bayern - Lazio match, Kane headed the opening goal for the home team, scoring his 50th goal in European competition. Thanks to that, this striker caught up with Didier Drogba's achievement, who scored 11 goals for Marseille and 39 goals for Chelsea. When he scored the ball to seal a 3-0 victory in the 66th minute, Kane surpassed the legend who won the 2012 Champions League with Chelsea.
Having 51 goals in European competitions at the age of 30 is not an impressive achievement. Kylian Mbappe is only 25 years old, but has 46 goals in the Champions League. However, most of Kane's goals have been scored at Tottenham, a club that is not very strong and does not often qualify for European Cups. This achievement also proves in part Kane's loyalty during 12 consecutive years serving Tottenham.

Kane started playing for Bayern in August 2023. He has scored 33 goals in 33 games for his new club this season, including six in eight Champions League matches. Previously, the England striker set a record of 280 goals in 435 games for Tottenham and 62 goals in 89 games for England.
Kane joined Bayern for a transfer fee of 110 million USD. The 30-year-old striker is a record contract for Bayern as well as German football.
In between Kane's double, Bayern also had a header from Thomas Muller in the 45+2 minute. The German veteran scored his 54th Champions League goal and set a record of playing his 149th match for the club in this arena.
Bayern beat Lazio 3-0 in the second leg of their last-16 tie and advanced to the quarter-finals 3-1 on aggregate. The German champions reached the Champions League quarter-finals for the 13th time in the last 15 seasons. In the previous 12, they reached the final four times and won twice. The win over Lazio on 5 March was Bayern's 14th consecutive home match unbeaten in the Champions League, following 10 other wins and three draws.
Kane's brace also saved coach Thomas Tuchel from being fired early. Previously, after being eliminated from the German Cup and 10 points behind Leverkusen in the Bundesliga, Bayern's leaders were said to be waiting for the Champions League results to replace Tuchel immediately, instead of waiting until the end of the season to say goodbye to him as announced.
