Meanwhile, many countries and organizations around the world have urgently mobilized rescue forces to support Myanmar in overcoming the consequences of the earthquake.
Following President Vladimir Putin’s orders, the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations has dispatched two planes carrying a 120-strong rescue team and medical staff to Myanmar. The rescuers also brought along a team of sniffer dogs, which are trained to search for survivors under the rubble. Anesthesiologists and psychologists are also part of the rescue team, tasked with assisting the injured and survivors in a state of panic. With experience in dealing with natural disasters, the Russian rescue team is ready to carry out search and rescue missions in the most extreme conditions.
Meanwhile, Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar said that India has sent a C-130 military transport aircraft with a search and rescue and medical team, carrying hygiene kits, blankets, food and other essentials to Myanmar to join the rescue operation. Mr. Jaishankar pledged that India will continue to monitor the situation and send more aid if needed.
According to the Chinese Embassy in Myanmar, President Xi Jinping had a phone conversation with the head of the Myanmar military government, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, on the morning of March 29. Xi Jinping sent condolences to the people and country of Myanmar over the earthquake disaster. That same morning, a 37-person rescue team from Yunnan Province (China) also arrived in Yangon, carrying medical equipment and vital signs detectors.
Meanwhile, the United Nations announced that it will mobilize all resources to support Southeast Asian countries affected by the earthquake. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres pledged to support Myanmar in overcoming the consequences of the disaster.
US President Donald Trump also announced that he would provide aid to Myanmar after discussions with officials there.
In Myanmar, rescue teams are racing against time to find survivors in the rubble of collapsed buildings and bridges. The death toll has risen to 694, with 1,670 injured, according to Myanmar's military government. The toll is expected to rise further as rescue teams continue to search for survivors in the rubble. The city of Mandalay - the hardest hit - is at the center of the rescue operation in Myanmar.
The earthquake also severely damaged the important highway system connecting Yangon with Nay Pyi Taw and Mandalay. Many areas in Yangon are still without electricity and mobile networks are unstable due to the earthquake. This has hindered the relief work.
Meanwhile, in Thailand, rescue workers are trying to rescue dozens of workers trapped in a collapsed 33-storey tower in the capital Bangkok. Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt has said he will not give up and will mobilize all resources to search for victims.
Experts warn that the death toll from the earthquake on the afternoon of March 29 and a series of aftershocks could continue to rise, as rescue teams have yet to reach many isolated areas. A forecast model from the US Geological Survey (USGS) estimates that the death toll could exceed 10,000.
In the face of this dire situation, the head of Myanmar's military government - Senior General Min Aung Hlaing - made a rare appeal for support from the international community. He acknowledged the scale of the disaster and the need for outside help.
