Israel announces the death of two major generals, declares the destruction of a 500m long tunnel

The officers, two major generals and a lieutenant colonel, were killed in the central Gaza Strip. The Israeli military did not provide further details.

In recent weeks, Israeli forces have been engaged in fierce clashes with Palestinian militants in the central Gaza Strip, particularly in the Deir el-Balah area.

Since Israel launched its ground offensive in Gaza on October 27, 2023, the total number of casualties among its troops there has reached 338.

Earlier on August 24, Xinhua reported that the Israeli army withdrew from the city of Khan Younis in the southern Gaza Strip and ordered the evacuation of civilians in the central area of ​​this Palestinian territory, signaling a new step in the military campaign there.

According to Palestinian security sources, many residential buildings in Khan Younis were heavily damaged after the Israeli army withdrew. In the city of Hamad, dozens of apartments were destroyed and many buildings were leveled.

Civil defense teams, the International Committee of the Red Cross and other organizations are urgently searching for missing people in the attacked areas. Many bodies have been taken to Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis.

Meanwhile, Israeli military spokesman Avichay Adraee called on residents in some central Gaza areas to evacuate immediately for safety reasons.

Israel said the 7th Brigade was fighting on the outskirts of Deir al-Balah, destroying dozens of infrastructure and killing many gunmen.

The Israeli army also announced that it had destroyed a 500m-long tunnel of the Islamic Jihad movement in Khan Younis, along with many weapons and military equipment.

The Israel-Hamas conflict that has lasted since October 2023 has claimed the lives of more than 40,000 Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.
